The fees are insane! I just sold an item for $57.77 and the final value fee was $6.47 and the PayPal fee was $1.98!

I see alot of people on here selling things and when people use paypal they add a little extra to the price. Are you aloowed to do so on ebay if you are up front about it in your listings?

Quote:Are you aloowed to do so on ebay? There is a specific rule that prohibits this practice on ebay. There are also specific rules about speeding but I'm 2 for 2375 so far

Sorry, but there are thousands upon thousands upon thousands of sellers that would disagree with you. If you think PP fees are high, get your own merchant account then come back here and tell us what's changed. Nothing. It's no different, fees are roughly the same and you can still be charged back at any time. Even months later. Sure there are cheaper options than ebay. Start up your own site. Domain with privacy is $20 a year or so. Cheap hosting for a piddly site is about $4 a month. Cool. Throw your stuff up on there and come back and tell us about all the buyers flocking there to buy your stuff. See ya in a few years when you're bald or grey. It's not Field of Dreams, you don't build it and they automatically come. People forget that with ebay your paying for the prep work. List an item on ebay and you have instant buyers, millions of them, waiting to look at your stuff. It's like anything else in this world, you get what you pay for.

Simple really, the OP is just venting and made a factual statement about the fees on ebay. You on the other hand, made a blanket statement portrayed as fact, that is absolutely untrue. Fact is, you can make good money on ebay, without selling only "absolute crap."

And I have no problem with that. 99.9% of the items sold by members on this forum are on the block at very reasonable prices. Sometimes Items are sold out of necessity due to job loss or other circumstances. Why should they have to eat a Pay-pal fee on top of that? Not arguing with ya about this Jokingjoker, just making a statement.

Quote:Fair enough Scubu , however id bet you will find many more disgruntled sellers than you will happy contented sellers or do you have a pro ebay argument for that too ? I have had my ebay account for 10 years, and during that time I have sold a few items. Keep in mind that I'm a casual user and don't try to make a living at it. I've been listing a few items for my friend who is moving. The first Item ended at $260.99. The next day the buyer pays and when I check Paypal the entire purchase amount plus shipping is on hold, and Paypal tells me to ship immediately as to speed up the hold on my funds. I was miffed to say the least! Putting 1/3 oz of gold in the mail when the money isn't mine yet. My feedback is slightly higher than the buyers. This is supposedly for the protection of the buyer and the seller. After sending one email to Paypal and getting the standard brainless response....I sent this one: Quote: I don't see how I am protected at all. Maybe you can explain how I (the seller who is paying Paypal) is protected. You hold MY money until the buyer says everything is okay on that end (if the buyer is honest). In the mean time I ship out a $300.00 item with no guarantee the buyer is honest. If the buyer is not honest and you return his money to him (and I'm out my $300.00 item), exactly how are you protecting the seller who is handing his money over to you in the way of fees? Sellers have NO protection anymore with this Ebay-Paypal marriage! I've read alot of complaints from sellers about this....but never truly understood because I'm a casual seller and I don't try to make a living at it. Things were alot safer for the Seller when they could opt to accept other forms of payment. I never had any problems with money orders or personal checks as a seller and nobody ever had a problem with my money orders as a buyer. Ebay-Paypal are money grubbing and don't give a d__n about the sellers (WHO PAY ALL THE FEES IN EVERY TRANSACTION). So, once again I request that you explain to me just how I am protected as the seller! (And don't feed me the same line of BS you fed me in the last Email) You just insulted my intelligence and really infuriated me. You did not offer any explanation how a seller is protected against a dishonest buyer. I have yet to get a response and feel pretty certain I wont!

I too am a casual ebay user. I agree, their fees are insane but will simply say don't use ebay. They purchased Paypal for obvious reasons, to make more money. I agree with scubu that yes, millions upon millions of folks see your products and I agree that ebay is a business and businesses need to make money but, I agree that unless your going to sell something that you are going to make a nice profit on, don't bother. I opened an ecrater online store and have sold a few coins so far fee free. Not even the site charges me :-)

I think you will be proved right about the response Ratman ,thats part of the problem , they do not address concerns because they have no rational answers. They have the nerve to encourage free shipping and once again it eats into any potential profit. So looking at an ebay powerseller who is obliged to give free shipping now I believe to acquire that status , lets say he is selling Mercs and Rosies , average circulated , they go for a few bucks and often as low as a dollar for some dates if they are less than AU. Subtract a 44c stamp to send it , the listing fee , the final value fee and the now obligatory paypal fee and tell me agin who it is thats making money because it sure as heck isn't the seller. The only ones making money on ebay is ebay.
