Maybe they should move to a state with less tax, so that might carry over to less fees. Where I'm living (and also where ebay is located) just sales tax is 9.25% x( |

Exactly. I know the company I work for is located in Texas thank God. Our great left legislature has destroyed the business environment in this state for many years.

I disagree with the idea that any item I have for sale is seen by millions and millions of people. This I believe is another myth perpetuated by ebay themselves , it sounds great. Lets look at the facts.If it is a stamp for instance , well..that narrows those millions upon millions down doesn't it ? Lets say its a stamp from the Ukraine , the number of people seeing the listing just plummeted again. The fact is all you need do is add the visiter counter to any auction and youll see you might get a handfull of viewers.If you have something desirable the count will go up,but the millions and millions isn't going to happen. |

especially if I did an ebay search for "Ukrain" or "Ucrane" because I ain't a good speller! Just because millions of people use ebay...doesn't mean everybody sees every auction listing (or 1/10000 of them). Most people that use ebay have specific categories they search. Me, I rarely ever search anything besides " US coins and coin operated machines". There was a time I was into pottery and bought some Roseville, but that's out of my system now. |

Ill be quite honest and suggest that using a community forums classifieds is going to get you more viewers or just as many,probably increases your chances of a sale too. Its becoming more commen now to see a classified section on community forums and I think thats a great thing , totally eliminate the middle man , the fat cat , ebay. |

I used to sell on ebay (not coins) until I got fed up with their practices. I would like nothing more than to see other auction sites grind ebay into the dirt. |

I thought about giving up ebay at one point but doing so would cut me off on coin buying. I don't have coin shop nearby. |

It's all very simple. When ebay isn't lucritive for the seller, they'll stop selling. When the buyer isn't happy, they'll stop coming. These situations may be on their way, but they aren't here yet and there are, without question, people making money on ebay besides ebay. Hey, I do it and many others here do it (both large and small sellers). It would be great if the fees were lower, but they aren't. |

As a buyer, I love ebay. I've always hated the cost of shipping, but because of ebay's new feedback rules, a lot of sellers are going with free shipping or reduced shipping. I love ebay because I can find things I would never be able to find at a local shop or even show. |

I totally agree its good for just that , finding something you might not find locally , specialist things that interest you. These things can be a pretty slim market , millions and millions of people are not going to be looking for the same things. Some things are so commen on ebay its ridiculous , just see how many pages there are for lincoln cents. 148 pages,nobody has time to look through those for a LP whatever , if it doesn't have free shipping chances are it wont get looked at at all. On the who is making money thing , profit is relative to initial costs which in many cases leaves an extremely low profit margin if any,especially some coins , could even be looked on as a loss when free shipping comes into play. What bothers me is ebay has gotten greedy and sets its stall out with outstretched hand.It wants its money regardless of what happens. Sale or no sale.If it sells , the bigger your profit the more they want,thats not very cool. Not when they then charge another fee for handling the money they just took off you. I would totally agree its a buyers market now,i believe its seen its sellers heyday. |

The thing to rememebr about ebay is there are no buyers fees. Unlike some of the big auction houses they charge one party only. This really blows because as pointed out here before, the fees can be as high as 15-20%. Contrast this with a 5-15% buyers fee and a lower seller's fee for a "real" auction. And that the auctioneer assumes the risk of payment! The flip side is, indeed, that your item is seen by millions of eyes. It's what you pay for. And if you were ebay, heck you'd buy paypal too! hope this isn't hijacking the thread. If someone contacts me outside of my ebay sale what % should I lower my price? what % would I of saved on ebay/paypal fees. Thanx |

Usually if you are contacted to sell outside of ebay its worth having a 2nd look at what you are selling.If somebodies panicing to get it quick theres a reason. Dont reply through ebay as what you are suggesting is against policy and might get you booted as a seller. Edited by wetglaswegian

While I understand that it is disappointing to see profits taken away by fees, I don't think ebay or Paypal fees are outragous considering the services provided. I also agree with a previous post that coin forums are an excellent alternative. I've been 100% satisfied with all the transactions that I have had with CCF members. |

I am not knowledgeable about Paypal holding your funds until the buyer is satisfied, what's up with that? In my buying, zingo the funds are transferred. I would contact the buyer and politely explained you haven't received a cleared payment yet and do not ship until you receive cleared payment. Put the ball in the buyers court. I would cancel the auction for payment unreceived, if necessary. I'm sure my missed perceptions will be explained.  13% total fees, wowzers! Edited by Parklane64
