I have been identifying some foreign coins I have. I have two that I cannot find out what metal it is made of. Any help would be appreciated. I have a Polynesian 20 Franc and a Bahaman 5 cent peice. The Polynesian sticks to a magnet (so I think this rules out silver?) but the Bahaman does not. Anyone know? Thanks.

G'day,
quote: "The Polynesian sticks to a magnet (so I think this rules out silver?) ..."
- it's probably nickel. CuNi is usually 75% copper, and isn't strong enough for magnetic attraction to be apparent.

The other coin: I'm assuming that the other coin has a colour resembling silver: it's probably CuNi, which is very popular around the world for coinage.

Hi jprine
Just checked Krause and Peter in Oz is absolutely correct. All French Polynesian 20 francs ever issued are nickel and all Bahamian 5 cents copper-nickel.

Yes, the New Caledonian and Polynesian 20 francs are struck in Nickel (98% Nickel) with the Nickel of New Caledonia.
