I apologize for posting the same coin twice (I also listed it in the World variety and error coins section) but I can't for the life of me figure out what date or denomination this coin is, due to the inscription being so worn and doubled. I also do not own the Krause book going back to the 1700s, so this ones left me puzzled. The flip I purchased it in had "1718" written on it, but I'm not sure if thats the actual date of the coin.   May I ask what date and demnomination this coin is please? (And if possible, wether it is Double struck, or a doubled die?) Thanks! Identified - moved to World Coin forum - Sap |

It does seem to be an 8 Maravedis, and double struck. But this coin looks to be a cast copy to me.

alganbagerap - Thanks for that photo! It helps me understand what the motto is, I don't believe that is exactly the same coin however. There appears to be a number "8" or letter "B" on the lower reverse on mine, along with some other odd lettering, where there is none on that coin. (perhaps because its an earlier year/design)
echizento - Thanks for your reply, are you certain this is a counterfit? I was thinking of selling this coin in the future, and I want to be absolutely certain this is authentic before doing so. Is there a way to find out if this is authentic?

It is indeed a 8 maravedi in the name of Isabel II, which was cast in bell metal. Year is 1837, mint is Pamplona. KM#517

Thank you very much bart for that info! It has saved me a lot of time trying to research this coin. I found it in the krause book under that number, I guess they wrote the wrong year on its flip. The book says it is "Cast bell metal", and looks exactly the same as the one in the book, So I believe this coin to be authentic.
Phew... I was worried I had a counterfit on my hands.

Numismat -- I'm sorry, I don't understand, Do you believe this coin to be authentic or a counterfit copy? I hate to be a pest but I'm planning on selling this coin on ebay soon, And I want to be sure that I'm not selling a counterfit/copy. |

It looks like a genuine old piece, I was curious about how the double struck effect
can happen during the casting process. That is a bit of a mystery. =)
