Ill say real, the fonts on the obverse looks 'right'. Cleaned mind you, but then again its so hard to find a coin from that era that never has been.

ok d23
I know the site.... scott also had a whole bunch of " Centsles" slabbed coins in the auction. I sent him an email last week making him aware of their reputation. did NOT get an answer.
he is a good guy normally, not a coin expert, and he is a family man... normally very responsible.. and he calls it as it is. but.... he puts up good pictures and sends you more if you ask... I saved his butt once with a fake 48. he sent it to NGC, apparently came back as real.....beats me.

Hiya. I'll chime in as well. :) I also believe it to be real. The bridge on the nose is usually weak and disconnected, and the "font" is usually hard to replicate. I am in the "authentic" boat.

For lack of a better word, the coin above "feels" real to me--die struck and the right look of age. As a comparison, here's an obviously cast/toned 1899 fake:

The 72 is real. The 99 is not cast, however is a fake made in China, circa 2008.

The 99 is not cast--is it struck? Good to know, I was just going by the pebbly surfaces and loss of low-relief detail:

DVCollector what excellent close up pictures, sure brings out the flaw in the queens mouth. What do you use to get these results

Thanks! Those were shot with a Nikon D70S and their great macro lens (the 60mm).

Based off the closeup pictures I would say the 1899 was cast. If it was struck those pebbles and pits wouldn't be there. The impact of the Dies onto the planchet is enough force to smooth out the surface of the coin.

Bad clean job makes it appear suspicious.
