Thanks Wayne. I've found 2 more since my last post here. I'll get them all together in a few days & see if I can spot any differences.

Thanks for the pics in the other post as well. Great info for everyone to help find all the varieties that you're aware of.

I just searched through $100 worth of 5 cent pieces and only found 1 1972! Frustrating

lately, when I go inside a bank for cash, I've been getting $20 of 5-cents.
I've been stockpiling them, intending to noodle them in due course.
Yesterday, the monsoon kept me indoors, so I cracked one of these $20 bags.
The first one out was 1972. Before I finished that bag, I had one more.
Condition was about what you'd expect for a 38 year-old coin.
But, at last I have a '72. And I'm suitably enthused about the other bags waiting to be searched.

Well done Peter! I hope all the other bags prove to be as fruitful for you.

I was tidying up some coins last week and came across 6 x 1972 5˘ waiting to be put in 2x2's, and was a bit surprised I had so many. I vaguely remembered finding 4 of them.

I went through another $100 worth of 5c pieces the other day and didn't find a single 1972 5c. The only coin I kept was a nice 2001 off centre strike.

I have noodled 13 in total, probably close to $2000 in coins. 5 small obverse, 2 large and 6 that I haven't yet categorised (packed away before I knew there were two varieties)

I also purchased an Unc for $3.35 (average price from a collection at auction) and a GEM for $35. (both small reverse)

1972 5c are scarce,in fact any 5c coin before 1980 are rarely found in circulation anymore

Hah! I just went through some change to look for one and found it the 3rd 5 cent coin that I examined. It's in reasonable condition, too!

I'm going to keep looking. maybe I'll find another one.

I just did a quick count of mintages from Maccas (p117). By my calculation there were 785,907,000 5 cent pieces minted before 1980.

Why would you even suggest that they are rarely found in circulation?

Buy a sack of $50 and I'd be very confident that you'll have little difficulty in finding one from any given year (1972 excepted). But even then I wouldn't be surprised if you found one, after all there were 8.256 million of them minted.

There are plenty pre 1980 Five Cents to be found if you take the time to look for them.

Even the odd 1972 if you're lucky.

In $90 5c of searching:

1966 x 14, 1967 x 13, 1968 x 7, 1969 x 8, 1970 x 5, 1971 x 7, 1972 x 1, 1973 x 9, 1974 x 7, 1975 x 9, 1976 x 23, 1977 x 12, 1978 x 6, 1979 x 11, 1980 x 15. Total 147 coins out of 1800 or 8.17%. Still a fair amount in circulation to be found but of course 1972 remain difficult. I've found 1 in he last 3800 coins searched!

There are two types - a large and small reverse (echidna). The large is closer to the rim. I believe yours is the small. Its obvious when compared side by side, but I still have the occasional problem just looking at a single coin

"The large reverse is found on all issues from 1966 to 1972. The small reverse is found from 1972 to 1987 onwards" Macca's 2011 p116
