Yeah you're right - definitely looks like a small SD. Maybe they exist for 2017 too?

Yes Mr T. my thoughts exactly. I have asked a few ebay sellers to send pics of the actual 5 cent reverse and from those few that have, they have all been tiny SDs. So I am none the wiser. I am just looking for a dealer / seller with access to a few 2017 and 2018 baby / possum magic sets to verify if the small SD exists. Anyone....?

Might be worth going to a show - I'll be checking next time I do. I haven't seen any 2018 coins at all in change yet either so anything is possible.

Good idea Mr T, although there aren't that many shows in Adelaide. Just purchased a 2016 baby set with the small SD 5 cent. Very happy about that. Now focussing on the 2017 and 2018s. Mr T, are you a collector of 5 cent varieties too? Anyone else out there? I have just started on the 10 cent varieties, but I guess that's a new topic. Hans

Nice, so I guess that leaves the 2016 penny obverse, 2017 and 2018 as unconfirmed.
I'm interested in all decimal varieties but the 5c piece is one of the more interesting denominations. There was a Coin and Banknote Magazine article maybe 18 months ago that covered all the varieties up until 2014 I think, with statistics of coins in circulation if you didn't already see that (so I guess there are other collectors). I have seen multiple 2012 small SDs in circulation though (I'm in South East Queensland) though no one else seems to have reported it as being a circulating coin.

Yes Mr T., I treat that article as my guide, as well as Brissyboy's post on this site. His post includes the 'fine SD' variety which I have collected also. Interested in your comments about the 2012 small SD being 'in circulation'. I have 1 which I purchased as part on a mint set. Generally I collect 7 of each variety of the circulation dates, and one of the NCLT varieties (for cost reasons only). & happens to be one row in my album. No other reason. I will have to look at all my 2012s to see if I have any, but I doubt that I do. :( Do you collect them, or only interested in them? Hans.

I collect all Australian decimals. Still haven't got a complete set of 5c pieces (the rare 1972 and 1987 are elusive but I check my change and rolls regularly enough so they'll appear sooner or later, and I haven't given a lot of attention to the mint set only years).
I don't suppose you've seen the unconfirmed 1985 variety?

When you say that you haven't got the 72 and 87, I presume you mean the 72 low echidna, and the 87 high echidna. They can be quite tricky, but I do know where you might be able to get one. :) Perhaps PM me. I don't have the 85 low echidna, only have the 85 high. Didn't think it existed... Hans

Yes that's right - I have seen them both for sale but I'm going the challenging route of finding them in change (already looked at 186 1987 5c pieces). Have you seen a 1972 low echidna in change out of curiosity? I'm suspicious that it's rarer in some place than others. They certainly aren't as common as the survey suggests.

Hello Dorado, there was only one variety for the 1980 and, obviously, that's the one that you have. Quite common I am sorry to say. Hans

Mr T, all my '72 low echidnas come from circulation. I have about 18 of them out of about 140 '72s. The 87 high echidna was by far the hardest to find. I went through about 100,000 coins and over 500 '87s before I found one. I am in Adelaide. But some good friends from NSW were kind enough to look and found me 6 or so in about 2 months. They are serious noodlers though! So, I think that's where the '87 action is. They were both much scarcer for me than the survey had suggested. Many years ago I collected quite a few 72s and that's where I found most of mine. I couldn't really say how difficult they are to find now but because I noodled so many 5c pieces looking for the 87, I did manage to come across about 5 of the '72 lows more recently. As a rule, I don't buy variety coins unless they are MSO. And even those I have only just started to buy. I love looking for them if they can be found in circulation. But a bit of help occasionally in nice.
Anyone else finding them any easier? Hans

Quote: As a rule, I don't buy variety coins unless they are MSO. Agreed. Someone here I think said they found a high echidna 1987 from 40 coins in South East Queensland but I suspect they were incredibly lucky. Do you keep stats on the different varieties you find?
