Numismatics is...Many different things for different people! One of the most important for me is Conservation. Throughout history man has hammered or pressed images into the round disks that we hold so dear. Unfortunately many of these works of art have been lost through the ages due to various reasons. Many were melted, buried or lost at sea. Some were intentionally defaced while others worked their "tails" off in commerce. For me as a Numismatist, I feel a responsibility to preserve all coins in my possession so that future generations may enjoy them as much as I did while they were under my care!

Numismatics is a hobby that comes with a license to practice idiosyncratic behavior. It is peering through the locked doors of Wells Fargo at 4:01PM as your body screams for a coin roll hunt fix. It allows normal banking activity to include checking the rejection bin of the CoinStar for goodies. It defines a good day for Wall Street as finding 40% silver in the teller's tray. It means patiently explaining to the McDonald's cashier that the large coins with Kennedy's image are legal tender for small fries. It gives reason to hope that a red seal bill will jump out at you from an opened cash register if you stare hard enough. It is a hobby that demands tears, sweat and blood (brown splotches on the 2X2 from the time you pricked your finger on a staple way back when). Finally, it is fighting off an amorous spouse because the auction for that 1931-S Lincoln is expiring and you need to prepare an 11:59PM snipe.

Numismatics rewards the hobbyist in many ways. Coin values can be strictly described as the monetary value or price of given coins; but the knowledge of history, economics and geography available to coin collectors makes coin collecting an invaluable experience well worth sharing with friends, children and grandchildren. (Shhhhhh )

All great posts

I have selected the winners but I have a bit of bad news. I have had to alter my top prize and I regret to say that I will no longer be able to offer a 2010 Silver Eagle The problem stems from the fact that the Mint did not start minting them until January(typically minted in December and ready for sale the first week of Jan) and the authorized dealer's network will not even be able to place orders until Jan 19. My local dealer said not to expect them until the first week of Feb at the earliest.

Never fear, I have lots of goodies on hand so the top prize is now a 2007-W burnished finish Silver Eagle complete with OGP. Second Prize is a 1970-D Kennedy half dollar along with the other 1970-D coins(basically the Denver portion of a 1970 Mint Set) and Third Prize is a VG+ 1931-D Mercury dime. And here are the winners-

First Prize- deadmunny 2007-W burnished Silver Eagle

Second Prize- RFB 1970-D Kennedy half dollar with bonus coins

Third Prize- latman100 VG 1931-D Mercury Dime
