I see 5 more auctions for 2009 NON-MAG listed today. Perhaps not as scarce as people think? I know the 2010 cent is non-magnetic. I wonder if the RCM just used some 2010 planchets if they ran out of 2009 stock. If thats the case, the number could be fairly high for non-mags but would only be seen in the latest coins out the door.

I just got 3 of these in change from the post office. They look brand new as if they have not been in circulation very long. I think what's happened (from what I remember of my mint tour in the summer) is that there's a very low profit margin for pennies for the mint. I'm guessing that the cost of materials to cut and make the magnetic pennies have increased so they've bought a different material to continue making pennies but still make a profit. All 3 coins I got seem brand new as if they've just recently been pressed, and I saw an ebay auction with 2010 pennies all non-magnetic. I don't think it's a random case of wrong planchets used.

Great. If they keep coming out with MAG and NON-MAG every year and one is rare, I am going to be broker than I am :)

Thats nuddin'. I just spent 4 hours last night sorting through thousands of canadian cents (thats still growing from my pocket change), that I already went through a year ago looking for other varities. I'm still only 1/2 way done, and I didnt find any. I got another 4hrs ahead of me looking for this elusive variety

Dollar1948 keep track of how many 2009 cents you check and how many non-magnetic you find. Could be interesting depending upon how many 2009 cents you have.

Time will tell (after all the 2009 mint rolls get dissipated into circulation), if 2009 will be like 2006, with both 2006 RCM mag and 2006 RCM non-mag being fairly common or 2007 where 2007 RCM mag is very common and 2007 RCM non-mag is extremely rare.

Ok, will do..Ill start keeeping track. Im also taking another stab and the 2006 and newer of all the cents, to see if I got any other known unique Mag/Non-mag varieities of those cents as well. After that its off to the coin star they go. I'm not p'sng around with them any more past that point.

So I'm clear, the only years since 1999 that there is not both a magnetic and non-magnetic penny are 2000 and 2008 ?

Timotay01, Since 1999, non-magnetic and magnetic pennies were made almost every year. 1999, 2000, 2001 mag (P) pennies made in small quantities for test purposes only. Most coins for these years were non-magnetic 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 had both magnetic (P)and non-magnetic in large quanties, 2006 had (P), RCM and small quanties with no markings at all that were magnetic 2007 had very small quantities of non-magnetic pennies, almost all were magnetic. 2008 I believe this is the only year with magnetic only coins 2009 supposedly has both magnetic and non-magnetic pennies 2010 The jury is out on this one, but some reports of non-magnetic pennies exist.
