Those dated 1999-2010 often come in both magnetic and non-magnetic form. Those before 1999 are all non-magnetic. Look at 1945V's post above for a quick breakdown.

1945V, I can confirm the non-magnetic 2010 cents do exist as I have 2 of them.
"2010 The jury is out on this one, but some reports of non-magnetic pennies exist."

Re: non magnetic 2009 penny I got 15 rolls from the bank yesterday. One roll was see-through plastic and appeared to be machine finished. It had old and new coins. Where do such rolls come from? Anyway, I opened that roll first and found 6 non magnetic 2009 pennies. The other rolls had 46 pennies, all were 2009 magnetized. I found this very interesting but confusing. I am a newbie. If I get more rolls and I will, I'll be asking for those clear plastic rolls. Gerry.

Well, I just ran a large magnet through approx 1000 cents, and I found 6 2009 Non magnetic. Im thinking this thing isn't as rare as one would hope.

In defense of the guy who said the minting window was short, we can infer this from the fact that they were not noticed until late in 2009 -- indeed not really until 2010. I, for one, checked the first n 2009 pennies I saw earlier in the year with a magnet.
I seem to remember the 2006-L zinc showing up reasonably late as well. (Not this late, but they certainly appeared to come out in a "batch".)
But yes, we can't know for sure when the minting happened. The 2010 annual report may show 2009-dated cents with CPZ composition, in which case we'll know more.

Hey - I'm reviving (i.e. bumping - haha) this topic in frustration because I just searched nearly 150 x 2009 cents and they were all magnetic! Grrr...
Is the consensus still that the zinc ones are reasonably common? I hope so!

Every 2009RCM penny I have seen in Canada so far was magnetic (i.e. steel planchet). Yesterday, when I picked a $25.00 box of American pennies in Northern New York, I found some Canadian coins in the mix. The 2009RCM I pulled out was "non-magnetic". It is my first and only non-magnetic 2009 so far.
