This is my first post so I guess I should introduce myself. I've been a coin collector for as long as I can remember. We never travelled much overseas when I was a kid, but people brought back spare change from their trips and that's how my travels began. Growing up in the UK I mainly focused on UK mint sets, as they were all I could afford. Then as I got older my tastes got more expensive. Proof sets and then silver proof 1 & 2 pound coins. Moving to Australia just over four years ago I stared collecting modern Australian silver pieces (love those Kangaroos), but recently I've changed direction and this was the coin that did it. My Grandfather passed away last year and he left me a very small sum, but I wanted to get something with it to remember him by. He was born in 1927 and when I saw this work of art I couldn't think of a better tribute. Of course now I'm completely obsessed with Australian Florins! I'm scanning eBay( ebay I've seen someone refer to it as )and OZtion and consulting McDonald and Rennicks guides all hours of the day and night. Surely this can't be healthy?

Welcome to the forum, Splock. This is certainly one of the most beautiful coins to come out of Aus. Steve

Welcome to the forum, Splock. A nice touching story. You think the florin obsession is not healthy? Just wait when you develop an appreciation for the Holey Dollar.

Even a Yank like me has a special place in his collection for the Parliament house Florin, it was the first Aussie coin I ever owned

Hi Splock, to the forum and to the magnificent obsession (AKA Coin collecting). My second favourite Aust florin after the Canberra one is the 1935 Melb Centenary. I have one only and took it out of it's special place a couple years ago & can't find it now. I know it's still here, just misplaced at present. As someone else once said (something like this), Coin collecting is the only hobby where you can spend ALL your money, yet still not be broke!

Thanks for the warm welcome and assurances that I'm not alone in this obsession. The Melbourne Centerary florin has certainly caught my eye (especially as I live in Melbourne), but I'm going to have to save a bit if I want a decent example. "- of course it's healthy: it keeps you off the streets and out of the pubs - the essential features of any healthy hobby ... as long as it doesn't get in the way of due regard for cricket and football." I've only been here for four years, but I already have a football team (you can't survive socially in Melbourne without one), but the pain of last season is still there (I'm a Saints fan) butI've already got my membership sorted for this season so any money left can go in to SODs (Shiny Objects of Desire).

So today, with some free time, I popped in to my local coin dealer. (as this is becoming a serious "habit" I now know why they're called dealers! ) I spent over an hour looking through the florins they had in stock and it was time well spent. While I was there I mentioned I also liked Crowns and he showed me a stunning Gothic Crown. It's got to be one of my (and a lot of other people's) most desired coins and this one was in beautiful, almost UNC, condition. The price put it way out of my league, but it was wonderful to see one in the flesh, as I've only ever seen them in books until now. Back to the great florin hunt I managed to bag me a stunning BU 1947,a lovely 1940 with just one or two detracting marks and a VF 1931. They're not exactly rare, and they're not epic in the way that a Gothic Crown is, but to me each has it's own charm and beauty. The collection is well and truely underway. Next weekend there's an APTA Stamp & Coin Fair in Melbourne and I will have just been paid, that's surely a dangerous combination!
