well that's a bummer. NGC did not encapsulated the quarter because it has no date. So all that waiting for nothing. At least I did not get charged for the grading service. I will call ANACS up and see if they verify the 1916 SLQ based on die characteristics.

What bs, haha. Try ANACS though, you should be able to get it slabbed somehow, and it won't take nearly as long this way.

Ok, that's weird. I KNOW FOR A FACT that both PCGS and ANACS do. As a matter of fact, there is a nice PCGS FR02 slq on ebay right now. I'd never seen a dateles slq in an NGC slab, but I would have assumed that they would grade them too. Oh well, we both learned something new and you didn't lose anything. I certainly wont be sending mine to NGC. I am planning to pack mine up and ship it off to ANACS soon, so maybe we'll get ours back at the same time...

Quick question Nod. Did NGC write a letter stating that they would not encapsulate this quarter, or is this just the dealer's word?

It came back with an NGC label saying Not Encapsulated, Illegible date

What? That's ridiculous. You should either talk to them or use perhaps PCGS.
Maybe something your dealer did? NGC definitely should have graded it.

Quote: Not Encapsulated, Illegible date I don't get it. I've seen a bunch of 1916 SLQs in slabs with no dates. The design characteristics allow for a date assignment without a visible date. I'm confused...

I'm confused... Does anyone have access to the population report for low grade NGC 1916 slqs? I know PCGS had 5 graded in FR02 and ANACS has a few, but I havent seen one yet in an NGC slab. It could just be that NGC doesn't participate in that part of the market, like some TPGs won't attribute certain varieties. I wonder if the dealer stated that the quarter is a 1916 in the submission? Here is the dateless PCGS FR02 on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/1916-Standing-L...em2c548b1885

Well I finally mailed her off to ANACS today, so hopefully I will be getting a great result in a month or so.

You might want to register online with ANACS too(free). You can view the status of your order, which is great for impatient folk such as myself. Mine just got there under the 5 day tier, so I should have results by mid next week.

Whaaaaat! I'm at work and I get intrigued in this read. Better than any novel I've ever read. I'm on the edge of my seat. I've probably lost an hours worth of work. Then comes page 8. What a let down! I can't believe they wouldn't encapsulate it! Whatever happened to the diagnostics that everyone seems to know about, except them? I'm very disappointed with NGC. Does this mean the bet with the dealer is off? It would be nice for you to score his paycheck along with the coin!

Does this mean the bet with the dealer is off? It would be nice for you to score his paycheck along with the coin! I think Nod's issue is NGC specific when it comes to dateless 1916s. Both PCGS and ANACS have certified dateless 1916 examples with more wear than Nod's has. Both Nod and I now have dateless 16s getting graded at ANACS, and I'm convinced in both of our cases that we in fact have a 1916 Standing quarter. We should soon get undisputable proof.
