Are Canadian Proof coins identified by a P mint mark? If not what does the P indicate and how can you tell a proof. Is it a mirror finish like US coins

Breed59,

The P marking has nothing to do whether a coin is or isn't proof.
It was used to indicate plated coins from 1999 to 2006.
On pennies, it indicates a steel core with copper plate.
On all 5, 10, 25 and 50 cent coins it indicates a steel core with nickel plate.
In mid-2006, it was replaced with the RCM logo to indicate plating.

Yep, proof coins have a mirrored finish with frosty looking images.
