I think I found some fairly rare coins in the box- there are loads of old English pennies and ha'pennies dating back to 189X (very worn tho) but after 1900 very legible. Going thru the little stacks I made, I noticed some pennies that had a small H to the left of the date. Only on 3 years I have tho- 1912, 1918 and 1919. I found a link with estimated value at http://www.tclayton.demon.co.uk/values/penny.html and I believe their value is dependant on their condition (obviously) but I am sure sure of grading them- would scanned images suffice to estimate the grade? Thanks.

Here are the scans, front and back. Note I scanned the fronts and then just flipped each coin so the top right coin of the "front" is the opposite side of the top right coin of the "back" series.... hope not confusing (-: The images were too big so the res is not great- had to reduce from 7.5Mb bmp to 178Kb jpg to 28Kb jpg... Thanks. Image: 1912-18-19H pennies-frnt2.jpg26.28 KB Image: 1912-18-19H pennies-back2.jpg27.65 KB

Hi,
Unfortunatly they are all heavly worn.
In ozzie grading terms they would be no greater then a VG. I would say they are all very close in grade.

They sell this type of coin in Australia for around 20 cents a piece or 6 for a dollar, Unless there is a rare date or variety amongst them. Still they make an interesting collection if you try and get a complete set of dates. I collect this type and condition of English coin if the dates are before 1911. This type of coin were used in Australia. In 1911 Australia started to produce there own penny coin.

Hi Toast, As far as I can tell, the 1912H, 1918H and 1919H are desirable and in UNC condition are worth UK£125, £275 and £280 respectively. Unfortunately they are far from UNC but better than they appear in the scans.... Still, I may be able to make up a set as I have a bag of these old pennies, but I'd seperated the "H" versions. I'll swap you for a Gold Doubloon (-:

Sean, the 'KN' (Kings Norton) mint coins of these dates are also desirable as well.Don't forget that these coins were in common use in Ireland, even after the introduction of the Irish Free State coins in 1928.This is logical,as the Irish Pound was the same value as the Pound Sterling - 1:1. Another good coin to look for is the British 1875H 1d.,which depicts a very young Queen Victoria.

Hi Aidan,
Yeah, the English coins were in common circulation right up until the 1990s where may shops accepted them as "penny for penny". I haven't found any of the KN coins though... I have an old booklet called "Check your Change no1" (3rd edition) which cost 2/6 at the time- it lists british coins from 1902-1968. I've cataloged all the English pennies and half-pennies in an Excel file- tons of them! (well, quite a lot anyway (-:

Sean,I am very surprised that you were still getting British coins in your change as late as the 1990's.I have been told that the old Irish 1p. coins have been found in change circulating as 5 Euro-Cent coins.
A word of advice - English coins were last issued in 1707,when it was united with Scotland to form the U.K.
Are you collecting Irish Euro coins at all? If so,here's a website that will be of interest to you; www.centralbank.ie .You can follow the links.I hear that Ireland has issued a gold 20 Euros.

ERm dont know where you got that from 1990's!!! The only pre decimal coin I ever spent was the three pence you used to get in your crimbo pudding, at the corner shop you could get 1 1/2 p worth of sweets (6 chews in them days) but that was around 1976. I think you can still to this day bank a pounds worth (240 old pennies or 480 half pennies) at Barclays bank, although you would be mad.

Apparently pre clad 1p's (copper) are now worth 3p in scrap!! You would think the mint would take them out of circulation post haste.

crimbo pudding?
Any of you Brits in or around Watlington or Little Brickhill?
Any Irish in County Clare?
Totally off the subject of coins I know but, that's where my husbands relatives began and I'm still doing his genealogy. If any of you do this sort of thing, please e-mail me. (McMahon/Murphy/McGrath - Ireland and King - England) Thanks so much!
Now, what is crimbo pudding?

Well I can't speak for Ireland, but I can definately say that there was no bronze UK predecimal stuff circulating in the 1990s. When I say that I mean 'legally', rarely you would come across a farthing or an halfpenny substituting as decimal pennies and two pences respectively. I was given a lustrous 1959 halfpenny a few months ago that someone had pulled from change, so yeah they're still out there but they don't go so far. However, predecimal florins were still circulating legally and in large numbers up until 1993, when they and their old large 10p copunterparts were demonetised. Predecimal coins then ceased to circulate, and the oldest coins became the 1969 fifty pences, which were axed in 1998, so 1971 is now the oldest dated coin you'll find in the UK.
