My metal detecting days covered a 20 year period in which I was involved in every facet of treasure hunting. Coin shooting, water/beach hunting, relic hunting, ghost-towning, searching abandoned homesteads, silver and gold mines, competitions and actual treasure hunting. I think I have found just about everything imaginable at one time or another with the exception of a gold coin.

I found a US 1909 penny on the ground once (in Canada!) years ago. It turned out to not be the special one every one wants to find. I lost track of the penny but had it for years. Maybe I'll come across it again tucked in a box or something, but I doubt it. Too many moves over the last decade.

I think that cent find was probably what tweaked an interest in my pocket change, and now I'm even more interested. Its fascinating and fun. Who knows, maybe I'll find something really good one day soon :D

I've found or received in change a couple of other US "teen years" pennies, which got spent by accident (argh!) We get a lot of US money up here, so not unusual to get it in change.

My earliest cents I currently have are:

US 1958 D
US 1960 D (large date looks like)

Canada - had a lot more but they accidentally got spent. Most received in change ;)

1 - 1941 one cent
1 - 1945 one cent
2 - 1947 one cents, one maple leaf, one not
1 - 1952 one cent
1 - 1955 one cent
2 - 1963 one cent
1 - 1964 one cent
1 - 1965 one cent

Thats it for now but am looking forward to payday next week and going shopping. Will buy a couple of rolls of coins to look through, plus a better magnifying glass. I need to practice looking at coins as I I would like to learn more bout grading etc

SilverMaple: sorry for taking so long to reply, but the coin that you show is certainly of that type.

My son has a nice portrait set of English / British shillings with all monarchs and most types from Charles 11 to date. Condition ranges F mostly for earlier types, to Unc for the more modern ones. Quite a nice balanced set.

The 1900 IH is now on ebay no reserve auction starting at .75 cents. Its about an F-12, would be higher if it didnt have the scrape on the first 0.

I found a 1911 Canadian dime in my change once. Not worth much, but it's silver and worth more than the face value.
