Today in the till at work...I found a 1943 American penny...it's very dirty looking...but it looks more like silver...on the reverse...why?

Koin Hunter, 1943 American cents are steel coated in zinc. They did this to save copped for the war effort.

@Cazzuey: You mean for silver content, right? Not all 1968s are silver, some are nickel. Try picking one up with a magnet to test it. I'm not going to tell you which one will be picked up, though :P

Well, this afternoon I opened my door to find a small box of loose pennies my neighbor dropped off to me. He had a jar full and offered them to me for face value to take them off his hands. Said there were about $10 worth. I sorted and counted them. $20.34 and 4 old tokens, and paid him. I scooped out the US ones as I counted and found 4 old Wheaties!! 1920 - looks like, but the "20" is quite worn, especially what looks like a zero. Makes this cent my OLDEST coin in my possession yet! (unless I re-find my 1909 Wheatie) 1944 1946 D 1957 Also scooped out a very weird looking Lincoln Cent1995 D ... weird slate grey like flat colour both sides, coin is slightly larger than a normal penny and has what I think I read was referred to as "railroad tracks" rim? The outer edges of the rims extend a bit out from the coin, maybe explaining the larger than normal size cent looking size. Metal underneath appears to be silverish, not copper or brassy/bronze at all. (sorry no pics yet. Will try and load my scanner yet again but since having to reinstall everything recently my computer won't install my scanner :( )

I'm envious. I don't have any 1930's pennies at all as yet! And I second your "This is so much fun." I'm having a blast and enjoying reading everyone posts in this thread.
