Never heard of them. I am sticking with the established 3. PCGS,NGC,ANACS.

$20 to a company I never heard of is a little much and a little risky. John1

Checked their web-site out. I guess they have to start somewhere. By the way, what educational background does a coin certificational expert have? Just wondering.

Really Jake? Don't you think there are enough dudes taking our money?Grading services really don't do anything that we can't do, they just get paid for it.

Quote: a new coin grading service from a local coin dealer. That statement right there tells me its not a legit grading company. A dealer can not give a biased opinion nor a 3rd party opinion of their own inventory because there is no 3rd party involved. This would be no better than any other basement slabber placing their own inventory in plastic cases and putting a grade on a label, definitely not a 3rd party grading like NGC,PCGS,ANACS

Bryan, if I read your post right, you may have read Jakes post wrong. I think he is saying that a local dealer told him about the grader, not that the dealer is the grader.

I would also like to add ICG to the respectable TPG's

you are correct, I did read the post wrong, I thought he was saying the dealer was the grading person/company. I didn't click the link or anything Quote:I would also like to add ICG to the respectable TPG's yes ICG is on the short list of actual Third party Graders and when I only listed the 3 above it wasn't insinuating these were the only 3. David Lawrence has acquired PCI and their grading service seems to do a decent job as well but it is definitely a pretty short list compared to all the basement slabbers there are out there Quote: How about DGS (dominion grading sevice). I havn't heard anything bad about them, has anyone ever used them? This is the old PCI I was referring to above that David Lawrence has acquired and from what I have seen and heard they seem to do pretty well but I do not think they will be any competition for NGC or PCGS any time soon as far as prices realized in their slabs and popularity

Some time ago I found a slabbed coin at a flea market. It was graded as an MS-70. Then I looked at the TPGS that slabbed the coin and never heard of it. Didn't buy it since it looked far, far from a -70 anything. At home I used Google and typed in Third Party Grading Services for coins. Try it. You'll go into shock. There are a real lot of them. But who knows, at one time PCGS may have been a little company.

I am not saying you have to be big to be a TPG, but you have to be a third party, you can be placing your own coins in a plastic holder and call it graded by a TPG, that is a opg One party grading service

Being in Michigan I am familiar with MMNS. I see them at all the local shows, and they were at FUN and in Baltimore last week. After looking at 200+ of their certifications that dealers have in stock I am getting very comfortable with their grading standards. Have to say I have yet to see one grade that I disagreed with. Now, having said that, yes I have a very low post count. I've been collecting a bit over 50 years and have seen a lot of things in the hobby come and go. MMNS offers a "Halo" holder. A reflective ring that lets you see the 3'd side of the coin when viewed straight on. At the last show I saw a prototype holder for the Presidential dollars with the Halo on each coin. Great eye appeal. The people running MMNS are long time coin people and they know they have to earn the collecting community's respect. Michigan collectors are warming up to this company. I haven't used them yet, primarly due to my focus on completing two NGC Registry sets, but neither will I rule out using them in the future. JMHO.........

I agree that ICG is a respectable TPG also. Who knows, maybe MMNS will surprise everyone and turn out to be accepted throughout the numismatic community. These things obviously take time and I will give them the benefit of the doubt. We'll have to just wait and see. For now, PCGS,NGC,ANACS for me :-)

Truth is they were ALL small unknowns at one time. I still stay with the "big 3" for the time being, though. I was at a larger coin show this weekend and there was a new " TPG" there doing grading and slabbing on-site. I was actually embarrassed for the company when I saw some of the grades that they were producing. I'm sure there are great and able people in some of the new startups...but they'll need time to mature and to earn confidence from most collectors.
