As I have posted several times, I am a huge proponent of PCGS and NGC. I think their holders are the best on the market for long term security and storage. I have two fairly valuable and important coins in PCI holders. My question is this. Has anyone had integrity issues with PCI holders ie. undesirable toning, holders coming loose, etc. If so, I'm thinking of crossing them over. Thanks in advance swcoin.ecrater.com

My pci encapsulated coins tended to move or "rattle" in the holder for what its worth.

Hi Dave, I haven't had any problems with the integrity of the PCI holders, just the quality of the grading. I've crossed two PCI coins to NGC at a grade 1 notch lower (EF-40 went to VF-35; MS-66 went to MS-65). Other PCI coins submitted for crossover were rejected as cleaned, questionable color, or altered surface by PCGS and NGC. I cracked out three other PCI coins and submitted them raw; two received the same numerical grade at PCGS and the other was rejected for surface problems by both PCGS and NGC.
I still have a few PCI coins I would like to get into the better holders but the odds of success aren't great in my experience.

Thanks Jaobler. I actually send an 1885 Half to PCI and prior to submitting, I graded a VF35 Cleaned. To my amazement, came back VF35 Red Label. Like I said, I prefer PCGS for the upper end coins, I just sent this one to PCI because they had a special for halves. The holders seem descent, I am just considering PCGS for these coins I have currently housed by PCI.

Is PCI still in business? I thought they had changed the name to Dominion something, I had heard they were a good company back then...

PCI went out of business a couple years ago and their assets were auctioned. The assets were purchased by David Lawrence Rare Coins and it was reopened as Dominion Grading Service. From what I have seen, their grading is more conservative than the old PCI.

The old green slabs weren't too bad, but when the gold slabs came out they tended to all be overgraded IMO. Don't know much about DGS, but being owned by a coin company would be enough conflict of interest for me to ever use them, again IMO.

Do you plan on having a independent company doing an audit to insure a level playing field with coins submitted by DLRC? Frankly, we don't see a need for that at this time as we feel that the coins and grading will speak for themselves. We do place the letter "D" at the end of the serial number for every coin that has been submitted by David Lawrence Rare Coins. We feel that is the best way to offer full transparency. In the past we've seen other grading services offer "independent audits" but the marketplace did not attach any special value to that. If we take time to grade the coins properly, the marketplace will appreciate that. Our Visual Population report is our way of demonstrating to the community how serious we are about grading coins correctly.

Of course, the fact that the principal (and namesake) of David Hall Rare Coins owns 65% of PCGS is OK, right?

I quit using them too! Until the TPG's finally get it in their heads that the collector expects more from them then what they are giving us. Send it back in and for a reholdering fee and we will make it right. I want it right the first time, if they have people who can't get it right then get some who can. Next thing they'll try is a 100 point system, that isn't flying in my book either.

Quote: From what I have seen, their grading is more conservative than the old PCI. By old PCI I think he means the last two PCI's. PCI had four owners before it finally went under. Grading under the last two owners was questionable at best. Under the first two it was better but the later graded coins under the first owner were the ones considered to be the best.

David Lawrence Rare Coins, David Hall Rare Coins, Albanese Rare Coins. Two have TPG's and one owns CAC.

I had some silver proof quarters in the old pci green label slabs and they all started to tone around the edges.
