Hey Upstate! Yes, that is the way the coinage law is written. No living person can appear on US coinage (same goes for currency). That is one of the little items that jumps in the middle of the Presidential dollar series. The series will continue until all Presidents no longer living have been honored (I forget the exact wording). But there is a stipulation that they cannot appear on the dollar coin for the 2 year period following the date of death. I agree with what Jbuck says regarding replacing images. Look at what it's stirred up just in this thread! Who...and why? 10 different people, 10 different opinions. I can imagine a few people feeling slighted when Franklin was replaced on the half. In this case we have the only instance (so far) of one president being replaced by another on US coinage. (I have no explanation for that, except fatigue. Thanks Eaglefoot!) But, I don't agree with BadThad. The half dollar is minted by law, and can only be removed as an item of leqal tender by law (wrong phrasology)removed from minting by law (as was done with the SBA). As is the case with the Sacagawea (Native American) dollar. It is still minted because current law requires it to be. Of the dollars minted, under the law governing the mintage of the Presidential dollar series, a certain percentage are required to be Native American dollars. That's my laymans version. The language written into the law is much more complete, and more official looking! Steve

Upstate said: "I think the first father - son combination would be an interesting obverse and historic enough to deserve being on a coin." then after being corrected that living people can't appear on coinage: "Well I guess that nixes my father/son idea." Presidents John Adams and John Quincy Adams have been dead and buried for quite some time now ;-). As for George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush, the only person out of these four who would merit being put on a coin would be John Adams. I'm all in favor of a return to Liberty, but if we must put historical figures on coinage, it is time to shake things up. Here would be my suggestions for important historical figures: John Adams James Madison Theodore Roosevelt (really should have been put on the ATB Quarters) Thomas Paine Eleanor Roosevelt Frederick Douglass Harvey Milk (note I am deliberately leaving off Martin Luther King, Jr. as we already have a holiday in his honor.) I would also be in favor of putting artists on coins, who are rarely represented on even on commemorative coinage. Mark Twain John Steinbeck Walt Whitman Ernest Hemingway Frank Capra John Ford

Eaglefoot, you nailed me! I don't know why I wrote that! I know, I just wanted to see if anyone was paying attention. Yeah, that's it.
Sit at the comp too long and you never know what's bound to happen......

.... ..... Ha Ha......LoL....I've done similar things MANY times on the forum here ! The thing about this forum, is that it is chockerblocked FULL of really sharp intelligent folks (and a few of them lay in wait for the opportunity to pounce) who catch things like that pretty quickly ! (I am not normally one of these ! ... ) I know firsthand how it "smarts" when you're just tired and you knew better and someone "nails" ya ! LoL But I did notice it......and sorry ! ..... I couldn't resist ! ...

Okay, you get 2 points for being the first to get the right answer! I think where my mind was TRYING to go was something along the lines of a PERSON being replaced, but I had PRESIDENT stuck in my head. Thinking it through now that would make more sense. All current, and past, images have been a symoblic image of Liberty and such other symbolic images. The Indian on the Buff Nickel, the Indian Head cent are two that immediately come to mind. I don't think the SBA dollar would really count (but I can see how some could) because mintage was ceased after the 1981, although they minted the one year only 1999 to coincide with the 2000 release of the Sac, which I thought was an interesting move, but cool nonetheless. And the Sac has not been replaced by the Presidential. There, I think that should settle this issue once and for never! I stand firm behind the . Steve

It's something that I noticed a while back when looking at past coinage and the rapidity of design changes, then jump into the 20th century and changes happen much less frequently after the intial changes in the early and mid part of the century to include actual people! Quote: Had the unthinkable never happened to JFK, would Franklin still be on the half? Can you imagine clad Franklins?! I would say yes. It took a national tragedy to allow the replacement of Franklin. Even then, I am certain there were a large number of people that complained about the "disrespect" to him.

The public's saving of the new JFK Halves as mementos of our fallen President was the biggest factor in the decline in use of the Half-Dollar in regular circulation after 1963.
The hoarding of Silver is also a factor, but Silver Dimes and Quarters were/are equally hoarded, and (clad) Dimes and Quarters are still made for circulation.
In fact, back in the 1980's, I was finding 40% Halves in circulation fairly regularly, because many of the hoarders in that post Hunt Bros. era saved only the 90% Halves...

Looks like I'm the only one to suggest a complete replacement. Would like to see something other than a deceased President.
RESURRECT THE WALKING LIBERTY!!

I just had a thought. If they get rid of the cent and nickel as well ( I mention that idea here), then only the dime would remain in that lens!

End the JFK as soon as possible and don't wait till 2014. While you're at it, stop printing the one dollar bill and force us to use the dollar coins. The waste of government money and resources is unimaginable.
