DNA......Three years ago, I took a few hundred dollars from the blackjack tables in Cripple Creek, and I hit a "Penny" machine for about $500.00 right before I was ready to walk out the door ! I still like Deadwood, S.D. the best as far as Rocky Mountain casino's go, though ! It's a "hoot" to do when vacationing there ! ....

i think the time has come to start replacing some of the presidents with other american heroes. other presidents, yes, but also some other non-political figures. at least as far as coinage is concerned.

But the Kennedy .50 Cent piece in particular.......Jedichef.... would you be for ending it altogether at the 50 year mark ? I'm guessing your vote is for a "re-design" with "someone else or something else" on it.

Either phase out paper dollars and force everyone to use dollar coins, or get rid of dollar coins. There, I fixed it for you. I like Eaglefoot's idea, but everyone does realize that with a 2014 issue, the Kennedy half dollar will have been minted 51 years and not 50, right?

They were all minted that year, just with the 1776-1976 dual dates. I am not counting unique dates, but years of service. Curious. How did you get 48 by subtracting 1 from 51?

I would like to see a change in the Kennedy half as well I do wish halves were in common use. I think the first father - son combination would be an interesting obverse and historic enough to deserve being on a coin. Also I believe our first African American president definitely deserves being on a coin.

I've stayed away from this one because it's a tough nut. I could envision, however, the Kennedy half running it's course to it's 50th anniversary. Then a change. To what, I have no idea nor any real opinion. And in the context of circulating coinage, since this isn't anymore, what would be the point? You could make it a circulating commemorative I guess, but nobody circulates them anyway. Like I said, it's a tough nut. Steve

There is a danger with putting real people on coins (live or dead). The longer they are on them, the more difficult it is to remove them. Doing so would be seen by many as being "against" that person.
Replacing them with another person will only make matters worse. Replacing Kennedy with Reagan, although an interesting idea, would just create division between the supporters of one and the supporters of the other.
I support a "Return to Liberty" on our coins. Remove all effigies and replace with the image of Liberty, as it was in the past. It is not against the person being replaced, but represents a return to the ideals that those people (often) believed in.

The half dollars only exist as a profit making device for the mint. Personally, I think they should be retired before they lose their dignity. Look at the poor Memorial cent.

Quote:BadThad: Look at the poor Memorial cent. Ironically, that series ( LMC) has now ended. The LMC has much more chance to get respect from collectors now that the 1959-2008 series is complete. And that's precisely why we're arguing for an end to the Half-Dollar. We can't just keep collecting NIFC Halves forever.... 2014 is the '50th anniversary' year of 1964, and besides that, Halves were minted in 1975, they just said "1776-1976" on them... PS: I love Deadwood, too, eaglefoot, but it's a bit farther of a drive for me!
