I don't think any president or politician should have been put on a coin. I would much rather see the coins of old come back (liberty in her multiple areas for example). No one man, no matter how great people think he is, should be placed on currency. Bring back old coins!

I'm pround to have Abe Lincoln, George Washington, Jefferson, Grant, etc., etc., etc., etc., etc., etc., on our currency. And certainly wouldn't mind a Reagan Dime ..... ... Yes Presidents are boring and the majority of the time people would and will not agree on who should be on them. Reagan didn't do a whole lot that would merit a coin for him (purely my opinion of course). I would rather not have an argument on what reagan did or did not do. But I can see that we are more agreement that the old coins are definitely better. Presidential head coins will never be better than a good ole liberty. I am sorry I brought politics into the discussion. My vote would be scrap the 50 cent piece and put more time into making other coins look better. I would love to see each one of our coin denominations be just as beautiful as the silver eagle or st. gaudens or I even really liked the Walking Liberty half!

And " Reagan" is the one who wanted the American Silver Eagle !! ........ Quote:Despite congressional opposition[7] [9] to the sale of stockpiled silver through early June 1981, the House Armed Services Committee decided on June 10 to approve a Reagan administration request to sell government-owned silver beginning in fiscal year 1982 to help balance the federal budget. it was signed into law by President Reagan on July 9, 1985. Thus, the authorizing law for the American Silver Eagle bullion program is Title II of Public Law 99-61 (Liberty Coin Act) Thus, the "most beautiful coin in the world" began.......

Maybe thats one thing reagan did right. He didn't design or produce them though. It's definitely close, but I would say st. gaudens is a little it more beautiful than the ASE.

I'm in favor of getting rid of Kennedy from the 50 cent piece, its long over due. If we're gonna put anyone on the halves, I vote for true American Hero's. I don't mean presidents or generals or anyone else who barks orders. I'm talking about individuals who've done great achievments for this country. How about Thomas Edison or GW Carver, people who've made a difference. Remember Ben Franklin?

by removing the half from circulation you remove the possiblility of searching halves. You are basically advocating towards killing the hobby you love eaglefoot

I think he is trying to say getting rid of the JFK design but have something else on the half instead.

The debate that is starting here about Reagan is a perfect reason to stop using presidents on coins, at least modern ones. Personally I would hate to see Reagan on a coin as I don't think he was a good president. But having said that, two of the three 20th century presidents on coins were democrats (Roosevelt and Kennedy), with Eisenhower being the only Republican.
The problem is that using presidents we can all remember will always cause controversy. We don't need that when talking about coinage. Can you imagine what conservatives would say if an Obama coin was proposed? They'd flip out. A Reagan coin will do that to liberals, maybe not to the degree of a George W. Bush coin, but trust me when I say it wouldn't go over well. Just put Liberty back on coins and let the national healing begin!

....... Yes, that point was not lost on me in bringing this discussion to the table. I wonder how many they would melt down in the first year ? And although that is a horrifying prospect that the popular "half huntin'" would come to an end.....yes....that is part of my thought. It "is" an inevitable end anyway right ? .....so it's not too dramatic and shocking too suggest it now with this topic. But I think that once this happens, the complete Sets would be much more attractive and possibly more and more valuable in time too. As I mentioned earlier, it could go to the wayside like the "IKE" in value.....but I just don't think so..... I think the "Future Classic" Kennedy coin should just go out " at the 50 year mark" with a bang, and then let time do what it does to coins and series. Regardless of what happens......I'm staring my Set of them soon, with an eager anticipation ! .....

Quote: I think he is trying to say getting rid of the JFK design but have something else on the half instead NO ! ..... I am not for a "re-designed" Kennedy half with him or anyone else or any thing else on it......it isn't a coin that Americans will use, so any idea to the contrary will not work ! Now, it may be that they would do a half with some other kind of design and not Kennedy, and have it stay NIFC....basically "just" for Proof and Mint Sets....but I'm not a fan of that either. I realize that the .50 Cent piece does "jack up" the Sets....and maybe that's why this coin will continue....but, I say let it go !

Quote: XavierOfGreen: ...by removing the half from circulation you remove the possibility of searching halves... We were advocating ending the production of NIFC Halves, not the recall/removal of all existing Half-Dollars from banks. The Halves that most people are searching for haven't been minted as business strikes since 1969, anyway! (that said, most Half-Dollar searchers will keep notable NIFC's and varieties that they find in rolls) The Half-Dollar is already 'removed' from everyday circulation (ie: use in retail transactions) and can generally only be obtained by specific request from banks that stock them. Quote: Casinos have an abundance of them. Less so in Colorado, after the Half-Dollar slot machines were converted to $1 coin slots in the years after 2001 (2001-D, the last business strike-issued JFK).
