The thing I have heard about the sets of State Quarters when the sets were complete was how poor the quality was. They were all 'bagged up.' If you wait then you will get the left overs after everyone has cherry picked all the nice ones. What are you getting then? BU? NO!! You are getting uncirculated. I really don't think mintages come into play much for me. I don't think if I have a bag of bagged up low mintage coins I will be able to get much for them in 11 years. However, if I am lucky enough to find a couple really nice high MS coins in a mint wrapped roll and they happen to be a low mintage series then the pay off will be 100-200 times face and my investment will be half what the bags cost.

I bought the Hot Springs P&D at the coin store yesterday. $1.50 for the two of them.

Probably true about the "bag"... MorgansDad has said as much too.....but what the hey you know....it's only 30 some odd dollars.... You should maybe consider getting the F.D.C.C.'s. Those are indeed the only true "First run- First day" coins !.....there should be some nice BU beautifully struck coins in those ! (Mine are !) But that'd be a rather expensive P&D Set to crack and send off in the hopes for a high grade Hummm?

Quote:Coincrazed: I don't do that State Quarter B.S. Yeah, now it's 'National Parks B.S.'. This is a new higher level of 'B.S.', because you can't just walk into a bank and walk out with a box of BU rolls at face value. Buying P&D Mint rolls 5 times a year for 11 years ratchets the 'B.S.' level to unimaginable heights, and now you can get coaster-size 5 oz. monstrosities that will still say "Quarter Dollar" on them! Funny, I had no problem dumping massive quantities of State or even Territory Quarters into circulation (I spent over $60 worth of BU Northern Mariana Islands-D alone), but so far I've only put one Hot Springs Quarter into circulation (and it was just covered in planchet rinse, it looked horrible!). Heck, I even spent 23 2010-P Cents! It's just that if that mintage for Hot Springs D stays at 19 million, I'll want to keep them all, even if they're planchet rinse spotted and scratched to oblivion! (not to worry, eaglefoot, the ones I sent you looked pretty good...)

I don't believe these were ever intended to satisfy the serious collector (States, Territories, Nat'l Parks, and whatever follows). But they did and still do provide some "excitement" for the novice. They will never be worth much over face value in our lifetime (speaking of the circulating coins only). Of course they did achieve their primary objective for special sets ... make the U.S. Mint a mint.

Just received my Hot Springs P & D coins bought from ebay. They're nice looking coins, but as I said before I think this was a bad decision by the mint not to let banks order them like State Quarters. Instead of buying a roll for myself I'll just be getting them one by one from ebay sellers. Another opportunity for them to make money. Doubt I'll live long enough to see regular issue quarters return. Bring back regular issue quarters and stop this commemorative nonsense.

Quote:matchbox: I think this was a bad decision by the Mint not to let banks order them like State Quarters. A bad decision for the Mint. The mintages may have been millions higher, just from filling the banks' orders! All else being equal, more business strikes minted equals more seigniorage (profit) for the Mint. They may be missing out on minting 10 to 20 million more coins per design, simply because the banks can't special order them... The resulting low mintages are good for collector interest, though. If the Hot Springs D stays at 19 million, even the 'classic' Washington Quarter collectors will have to concede that this is a 'low mintage' variety (since most years of Philadelphia Quarters from 1932 to 1964 are of higher mintages than 19 million!). Then, add in the increases in U.S. population, and the coin collector population, since 1964! I do still think that the mintage figures of National Parks Quarters will gradually increase as the series progresses, simply because of attrition of circulating State Quarters, which now constitute the bulk of America's circulating Quarters...

I think the F.D.C.C.'s are really expensive. Add certification to it and that is a big gamble. If nothing else, with the two roll set, Ill have 39 sets to dump at the end of the program. As for all the series haters out there, I really believe that you all have an old school mentality. I see the commemorative series thing as the future. The State Quarters brought new collectors into the hobby and in the future it alone will bring even more. I urge you all to try and think of your grandchildren and great grandchildren picking up the hobby and having so much fun trying to fill folders with state and territory quarters. These new collectors will one day (near future IMO) help your old school collections surge in value based on demand. I urge you to welcome change. Sincerely, Kurt

Quote: Seated.... They will never be worth much over face value in our lifetime (speaking of the circulating coins only). You don't think there will be any "demand" or "value beyond face" for high range MS quality circulated Business Strikes ? (I'm speaking of 20-30 years from now). With the introduction of "Satin Finish".....you can't get those nice quality Biz. strikes from the Mint in a Set anymore....only from circulation..... equaling = much harder to find. Add low mintages to that in this economy.... I agree with Kurt in this a lot, and he explained my thoughts better than I could. I think, that all of the "Hoopla" that the State Qtrs. created.....bringing the estimated total number of coin collectors up to 180 million, and then the Territory Qtrs., and then the Parks Qtrs......the Cent changes etc. etc. etc., that it's just brought a massive new breath into coin collecting, and a mass amount of new collectors who will/do have NEW interests. And because of this, these exact folks who were transfixed on the State Qtrs., will see to it that all of this "new Modern stuff" from the Mint will have some level of "staying power". The extent of that, only time will tell. I'm not saying "everything" that has come out or will come out will be a "hit" ......no no no.....not at all.....but "some" things are bound to be IMHO. See, it ISN'T the "old-schoolers" at all who have any interest in them anyway......it's this new breed of the millennium, and the Ultra Modern coin collectors who may possibly make "the new stuff" into some level of credibility in the future, the very coins that are just kind of "scoffed at" by "old-schoolers" now. Don't forget..... SOMEDAY THE NEW COLLECTORS RIGHT NOW ARE GOING TO BE "OLD-SCHOOLERS" 30 years from now ! .... This won't/can't ever take anything away from Classic coins...... that's impossible...(the love for those will ALWAYS be there for EVERY consecutive generation no matter what,......but I think looking at things from a new Modern perspective.....with the future in mind....and the fact that this sport is really changing, is warranted.

Dear collectors,
Ofcourse, there is not a mint in Washington DC...don't be silly. If you take a look at my original post at the bottom of page two (reposted in BOLD below)...you will see I said:
The Mint HEADQUARTERS has a gift shop on the first floor.
Not a mint but...THE US MINT HEADQUARTERS.
So yeah ..you can get BU coins from both mints (that's P for Philly and D for Denver for those who are Mint challenged) out of the coin change machine in the lobby. Even exchange dollar for dollar..no premium.
"If you live in/near Washington, DC, I can solve all three of your issues.
Inside the US Mint headquarters is a gift shop. IN this giftshop is a dollar change machine filled with new issue coinage. There are 3 machines. 1 for the latest President Issue, 1 for the latest Native American issue and 1 for the latest Quarter issues.
These coins are at face value. These coins are BU These coins are mixed from both mints.
I got $20 worth on Thursday and have nice examples from both mints in bu condition.
Win/Win situation."
