I wonder if anyone familiar with VAMs might recognize something about this coin. And what do you think it would grade? (Does the reverse look as if it might have been cleaned?)

Diane, did it have a number or numbers with the VAM designation? Was it listed as a VAM? There are many different VAM's and a lot of them need to be seen under magnafacation. Bryan is the VAM expert,he might be able to see something. It looks like there might be a die crack on the neck but I cannot tell for sure.
I don't think the reverse has been cleaned.Just looks like contact marks.

I have to say I couldn't click this link fast enough to see what was going on in this thread, but sadly to say I have tried to blow up the pictures, change contrast and just about everything I can think of and just cant see anything that stands out here. If at all possible can you look at the word LIBERTY and see if you see any doubling, also if you can take a picture of the eagles right wing (your left when looking at the coin) because there are alot of engraved feather VAM's for the 78-s series and I just cant tell if this is one of them or not from the pictures. If you couls just check them parts listed for me I may be able to see if there is anything there but just cant do anything with the pictures provided

Under 10x mag I thought I might see doubling, but if so the offset is very slight. I can't seem to get enough detail in the photo to show what I see under the microscope, but here's the best I can do. I think the B shows it best, but I'm not sure if that's just the way it should look anyway.

I'll try the eagle's right wing next.

It's not that this is marked VAM or anything. I've just gotten interested after reading all the neat posts about VAMs and thought I'd put up a couple of my Morgans for others to look at. I'm waiting for a copy of the book, which I've ordered on interlibrary loan (don't know if they'll be able to find me one).

I'm not much of a VAMmer, but as for the grade, I'd say about MS-62.

In addition to this coin, I have one 1878 Morgan with the notation 7 T Feathers; 3rd Rev,
and five 1878-S Morgans all noted 2nd Rev. Would you be willing to look at those also? If this quality of photos is not sufficient, I may be getting a better light in a couple of months, if I can swing it, and I could try then.

The only other Morgans in my collection with notes are

1979-S 2nd Rev
1880-O double 18
1882 O/S

But as all my Morgans were my fathers, and I know he didn't have the VAM book and didn't use the Internet, it seems like some interesting varieties might have slipped past him, especially as he put this collection together many years ago.

I'm really thrilled to find this forum. It's amazing to be able to communicate with people who know so much about coins!

I will look at any and all 1878 morgans you have to throw up here with the same enthusiasm I clicked on this one. I am getting ready to take the family to the Mountains and I will try to study the pictures you have put up when I return home
