I have a guy locally selling VG+ rolls of 1939-59 rolls for $8/each. Guarantees 1 silver per roll.
If I buy 5 for $40, get a roll free and will guarantee (at least the silvers) are not duplicated.
Or 10 rolls (again guarantees 10 different silvers) for $75, get a free roll of mixed 40 & 41 PDS.
What'dya think? Worth it?

I don't think it is a very good deal. If he knows that they are all pre-196o, then they have been searched so you will probably not find any key or semi-key dates, or any varieties that would bring any premium. As for the silvers, they are worth $1.09 each. If you are looking to complete a set try roll searching, you can get them for 5 cents each. You could also just by a complete set for about 30 bucks. I prefer to find mine in the wild.

Thanks for the feedback wvrichard. I like finding coins in the wild, too. But, since I don't have a Jefferson set going, I thought maybe a few rolls would get me kick started.
But, after I posted I got to thinking, there may not be duplicates in each roll, but that doesn't mean I'm not going to get a duplicate roll(s)!

Since you like finding them in the wild, if you have the time and the patients, roll searching is the way to do it. By the time you search 1,000 rolls, you should have a complete set minus about 10 to 12 coins. And you may even find a couple of indian heads or maybe even a V nickel. In the past year I have searched 2,600 rolls and only need 4 to finish a set from these rolls. I have also found 18 indians and 1 V nickel, as well as a few unc's from the 60's and 70's. Prybob told me that the 1947 Henning that I found is worth over $100. You never know what you may find!

If you buy one roll, you'll pay forty cents a coin If you buy the "Buy 5/get one free" lot you'll pay more than 33 cents a coin. If you buy the "buy 10/get one free" lot you'll pay more than 34 cents a coin.
What are your collecting/collection preferences?
Would you be satisified with a collection of Jeffs, half of which are VG, some of which could very easily be AU/MS? -- particularly when a set of VF and E/XF Jeffs are not hard or too expensive to acquire (as wvrichard pointed out).

My dealer offered me a bag of 1940-1960 circ nickels for $315. There is 100 rolls in a bag so that is $3.15 per roll. He has a buyer for 38's and 39's so they are separated out. $7.50 a roll sounds high to me.

pyrbob...my opinion only:
i think your dealer offered you a worthy purchase (for searching). Hopefully, with crossed fingers, you'll find something that'll even out or better your purchase. 16 cents a coin aint too bad for the first half of the dates in the bag when there's surety that no coin is younger than 1960.
Good luck.

I'd go buy 1 box of nickels. That is all it will take to get the Jefferson set rolling big time. You'll keep a few dollars worth, return the other $95 or so. I started roll searching to build a set from the wild in January - and am down to 13 holes to fill.
I've got a few rolls of 38-59's (no silver in them) that I'd sell you for much less than $8 to also help jump start if you'd like. There are some semi-keys in them, as once I filled the hole any duplicates just went into the rolls. PM me if interested.

Thanks, afcop, I'm waiting to hear from a guy with a couple of Lincoln's out your way. I might be out there tomorrow, if you're available. I'll let you know. Did you get my dealer e-mail?
