2007 P Dime - Cud Or Something Else

Ceylon62 Pillar of the Community United States 1285 Posts	Posted 06/01/2010 07:07 am Hello, As most of you probably know by now I have no capacity currently for coin pics. So I am borrowing this pic to explain what's going on with my coin. The 07 P dime is towards the bottom of this page (052) This link is not allowed by the Staff /Coin_Help_Blog/us-mint-error-coins/ My 07 P dime has more metal from the neck extending to the MM. I had to look at the MM through a loupe to figure it out as the metal (big chunk) is extended all the way from the neck to the P making it look like a D. Also on mine there is some sort of doubling or grease filled / blurry effect going on with TRU "in god we trust" (T looks like a I ) and streaks below the whole area (trust). However I do not have anything going on the reverse. Is it a Grease Filled Die / Cud / combination of things. What is it? Thanks. The author of the pic calls it a Cud. BTW, I searched CCF and did not get any hits and Google found the above link. If the link is removed by the mods then search Google for "2007 p dime Cud" and link is the 6th one down. Scooby Due Pillar of the Community United States 4000 Posts	Posted 06/01/2010 12:33 pm I see people use the term " Cud" for all kinds of chips and breaks. I don't think it is actually considered a Cud unless the rim is involved. I'd like for someone to set me straight on that. Cuds command a premium, chips do not. I guess there might be some people out there that would pay extra for a chip, especially a well-placed one, but as a general rule of thumb, I'd say no. Report this Post to the Staff

Die chips are an accepted part of the minting process and occur after extensive use of a die. A Cud is a collectible error because it is a die break that leads to die failure. The technical(and correct) definition of a Cud is a die break that affects the shank and face of a die. Unfortunately, " Cud" is one of the most misused terms in numismatics.
