If I understand correctly, auctions like Starks and Heritage take about 30% commission.

Do coins on ebay selling above $1000 not do that well? I am assuming you can do better than a 30% discount to trend on ebay. Though in my experience the prices bounce all over - sometime better than trend other times worse (but not 30% worse).

Its only worth getting involved with the pro auction at that level on high end coins?

Jay Leno got $800,100.00 for a Harley he auctioned on ebay, so it's not like there's not money out there to be spent.

You're going to get all sorts of opinions on this. Personally, I would not hesitate to sell a coin with an anticipated value of $1000-$5000 on ebay. Part of that, however, is my own circumstances: I have 100% positive feedback rating on over 4700 transactions and I have achieved ebay's "Top Rated Seller" status. In other words, buyers, for the most part, see me as trustworthy and they see that I've been around for a long time. I sincerely believe that if I auctioned a coin worth $1000 I'd get pretty darn close to that.

If your concern is that you'll get a scewball buyer who won't pay or who will try some sort of rip-off tactic there are things you can do to mitigate against that possibility. Go into your "Buyer Requirements" section on ebay and look at the various things you can do to eliminate certain types of buyers from even bidding on your item(s).

As a final idea, I think our forum "dad" (Bobby131313) offers some type of consignment option where he'll sell it for you on ebay. I doubt that he charges anywhere near 30% and I'd bet he has a great selling resume on ebay.

weerdsteev, those are encouraging comments. I did do very well on ebay last week with a gold coin. Sold it past the scrap value and then some. The $50 fee humbled me a bit, but I believe I did way better than the wholesale price. It is a little scary to put a $600 coin up for $9.99.
