Iraqi Mint Set And Paper Weight (Slug)

carmykle Pillar of the Community United States 2448 Posts	Posted 06/24/2010 2:12 pm For those that were interested in Iraqi Coins. While "playing" in the "Sand Box" in 2004. We flew a mission in central Iraq that required us to refuel in Babylon. Saw what was left of the Tower, the Museum, Husein's mansion, and had lunch on the bank of the Euphrates in one of the buildings that was restored to draw Western tourists to see the newly restored parts of Babylon. The museum was Just inside the "Gate of Ishtar" and run by a former university professor that gave tours and sold trinkets. I found the mint set and was I call a "Slug" (paper weight). carmykle Pillar of the Community United States 2448 Posts	Posted 06/25/2010 07:43 am Hard to say what the "slug" represents. I was probably meant to be a paper weight. I know from talking with the professor that the Obverse represents Husein's belief that he was a re-incarnated Nebuchadnezzar. The slug looks like silver soldar (probably some zinc alloy); it weighs 10 oz (AV), is 7.5 cm wide, and is 1 cm thick. I can only remember that the reverse was some kind of representation that Hussein was going to unite the former samarrian tribes. The language is probably aincient babylonian. I have a load of bill with Hussein's picture also. Report this Post to the Staff

If interested I can shoot each coin and post for your info. I have no idea as to each coin's denomination, but can research the modern Arabic numerals----if someone is interested.
