I look at it a different way. If you pick up every single penny you see on the ground over your life time, you will have accumulated a bit of free money.
Approximate worldwide life expectancy: ~63 years Assume you only grab up an average of 100 per year $63 over your life time
Enough to buy a nice dinner for two at others expense. LOL

I like that! Maybe I should have titled the thread "Free Dinner for Two!"

My father in law is now retired but he was a union plumber and would be called out to Disneyland all the time. Each day he worked there he would come home with a bucket full of change. You don't think those coins just stayed in place did you. Those coins stay there only long enough for you to make your wish. At the end of the day they are in a plumbers bucket! That's life for ya :)

I had someone throw Three Cents on the ground, and time me with a stopwatch to see how fast I could pick them up. It took me nine seconds total to get the three coins. So, I 'made $ 1812 an hour' in theory... Of course, if you throw out your back bending over to pick up a Cent, that could cost you thousands of Dollars!

O.K. first off DNA you need to work on your math skills brother. 9 seconds for 3 coins = $12.00 an hour. Also 1 cent per second is $36.00 an hour. I pick up every coin I see and put it in a jar until the end of the year. have been doing this and keeping track for 2 years now. I average @ $44.00 a year just picking up ground finds. Saving for another detector. Add it to my detector finds. WOLF

At least what you find is tax free income :) Found a SBA once - guess whoever threw it didn't think it was "real" money. Picked up a penny in front of my boss once - didn't help me get a raise :(

You also have to factor in the time to either exchange the pennies for notes, or to spend said pennies at a store, since it will take the cashier forever to count them...
Personally, I do not pick up pennies unless it is a wheat.

You're not making any money if you don't pick it up.
Anyway, how can a coin collector not pick up a coin from the ground?! You never know if it might be a treasure.

Perhaps, but my experience tells me that you are more likely to find treasure, and the treasures are better in a dealer's junk bin then in from a random non-wheat penny on the ground.

Do you pick up the face-up ones that you can't tell are wheats or not?

I cant help but pick up change I find on the ground. I always tell people who ask me why,
"Would you pick up a dime if it was on the ground?" "Yea" "What about 10 pennies, if they were all right next to each other?" "Yea, probably" "So why not 1 penny, 10 times?"
I usually just get a "huh, good point" from them. LOL
