I came across a Washington 2007-D Idaho quarter. I have never submitted a coin to PCGS before, But before spending the money on grading I was wondering if the coin is worth it. The quarter has one semi major bag mark on Washington's forehead and one minor in the field. On the reverse not one bag mark to speak of. The problem with this coin for grading is the strike of both obverse and reverse legends. The front on the coin the word "United" is weak and on the back the word "E Pluribus Unium" is weak as well! Does the forum have a opinion weather this coin is worth sending in or not? Of course I come across this three year old coin with so few bag marks and the problem is the strike. I have never seen a State Quarter with strike issues on the legends like this coin. I don't have a membership to PCGS I don't submit coins at all. Can I take this coin to a authorized dealer and have them submit it for me? And what is the cost for that service?

I wouldn't grade it. I don't see the cost of grading increasing the value enough to make it worth while.

Reality Check time!

The current PCGS grading fee for "modern" coins is $14. You would have to add on the shipping cost (they require Registered mail, both ways, costing about $12 times 2) so you'd be up to nearly $40 to grade this coin. My retail price guide gives a value of $12 in MS-67 for the 2007-D Idaho quarter and a coin with a weak strike and a "semi-major" obverse bagmark is unlikely to grade even MS-65.

I would instead spend my $40 to buy some inexpensive silver coins like circulated Walking Liberty half dollars. That would be a much better investment IMO.

If you are looking to have this coin graded at a particular grade, say MS 67 for example. I would just price the coin and buy it. You can find it easily under $20. You will pay much more than that by the time your grading is done. Unless this thing comes back as a super high grade (it doesn't sound that way from the description) it won't be worth the cost. Like the other poster said, save the grading money and try out a different series. The State Quarters are a good catch to get people into the hobby but they are over hyped and have very little long term potential.
