Dear coin people , I am new and asking for a hand from those more knowledgeable...I have found 4 or 5 1944 V nickels and one is a little different in color - every one but this one is bluey-shiny and this one is duller, flatter, more grey?, any idea why this might be so? I read somewhere that tombac nickels would not be attracted to magnets but this one is... I would appreciate any commentary that may help. Thanks...

Quote: ...and this one is duller, flatter, more grey... Sounds like it is missing the chrome plating. If so, this would be a great coin. Can you post a picture to show the condition it is in?

In 1942, because of the World War, the five cent coin was made with a brass-alloy called "tombac" to conserve nickel. It was made with 12 sides to avoid confusion with the 1 cent coins. The torch and the "V" design on the 1944-1945 coinage was designed to promote the war effort. It had the words "we win when we work willingly" stamped in morse code around the edge. The obverse bears the head of King George VI. It was made mainly of steel due to the demands for copper and zinc during the war. After the war ended, the five cents piece was once again made of nickel and because the 12 sided shape were so popular, it was retained as the design standard

Some years ago I built a short type set of the Canadian non silver 5 cents. Although it may not be a very valuable set it does incorporate a tombac beaver in MS 60. It is the star of that little set of coins that I have. My main love is ancients; I have been at that for nearly 40 years.

Thanks for your replies everyone - I'll try and see if my older camera can match your photo feats to give you a look see.
To Koin Hunter - the 1942 tombac nickel you posted - does it look as brown in real life as your picture? Thx

I think the Tombac and chrome steel 5cents are the best of the nickles.

dear coin people, I began this post a while ago and finally got a new camera so I could share with you - don't know if you can add to what's been posted here, but if these pics give you inspired thoughts, i'd be grateful for what you can share...I've been trying to do research on this coin but all I can come up with is that it may be a laminate error? thx In both photos, the left coin is the 1944 nickel with the unusual color; to the right is the usual whitish/bluey colored 1944 nickel coin.

I'm looking at a 1944 nickel today. It just came in some change at the store. This thread ended in 2010, so I don't know if anyone ever looks at it. This is a good chance for me to try to learn how to post pics. Hopeless fumblefingers here. Not known for photographic successes- but I see there's a "Test" site here. Thanks for reading.

The tombac looks much like the photo of the 42 if in a high grade. As it circulates it darkens and becomes almost as dark as a cent. I am guessing that your 1944 is a "missing chrome" coin.

There is only '1 known to exist' of the 1944 Tombac so yes probably a rusty missing chrome variety. If it's magnetic that confirms it; Tombac is non-magnetic. Or maybe a counterfeit.

Now I have a yellow/goldish coloured 1943 nickel. It's non-magnetic.Very nice coin.Nickels are seductive, aren't they? I love the weight and feel of them. I'm glad to have this coin. Just a happy comment, no newbie question today.
