I have a 1925 nickel that I am unsure how to grade (AG-3,G-4,VG-8,F-12,VF-20,EF-40,AU-50).

Can someone tell me their opinion.

Also as you can see there is a little bit of black dirt, tar or paint on it (not sure what exactly). Should I clean that off to increase grade? If so how? Soap and water? alcohol and salt?

To get an accurate grade, you should post clearer pictures of the coin- those are a bit too blurry.
Removing the dirt won't change the technical grade (that pretty much just depends on wear for circulated coins), but it would certainly improve the eye appeal. The only "safe" way to clean coins is a rinse (don't rub) with pure acetone.

I pretty much agree with Numisma, but when soaking in Acetone you can gently use a tooth pic or q-tip on that spot .

Compare it to the pictures at http://coinsandcanada.com/coins-gra...orge-V&id=12 Primary interest is the amount of wear on the headband of the crown.

Remember "shiny" does not mean "more valuable" to actual coin collectors. Anything that will remove surface metal to make it look shiny will very much decrease the value. Yes, actual coin collectors who would be interested in this nickel will likely be able to tell.

I took a much more clear picture of it. Can someone suggest the grade now that it is not blurry...

Why would you clean this coin, you have brought the value of it down by half, at least, the first photos the coin wasn't cleaned, now it has been at least cleaned and or polished.. I realize you are a new person on here, but take some time and read before you react.. could have been I nice example , but now.. it isn't..

Sorry to be another buzz kill, but why polish it so much yet not remove the dirt?
