I would expect the responses to this question to be less than an accurate representation for many reasons, the least of which would include the interaction on a previous thread, security, as well as numerous other reasons why people do not post detailed info on their collections.

I think there should be a poll, that way we know the #, but not who.

If I ever do - it will be because I have found it in circulation or I have won the lottery. My chances of being struck by lightning are far higher than my chances of winning the lottery - especially since I never buy tickets (lotteries are just a tax on people who are bad at math). Now...if someone were to give me one out of the kindness of their hearts - I wouldn't say no

metalman....LOL... I only ask this question because I have always been curious about the fact that they only minted 484,000 and it seems every dealer has one when I go to a show and every dealer has one in the magazine ads and I havent found one in my 39 years of collecting! Just curious.

I own 1 of less-than 500,000 minted. It's in a PCGS holder...graded as "genuine" only. It's probably worth about $800.00. Yet it's actually more safely protected than my home, or even my car. Both of which cost much more. I've seen multiple threads here on these forums giving detailed information on amounts much more than this.

I have owned two in the past but sold both. Plan to get back into Lincolns and IHC after I finish my "middle-age college education". PCGS CoinFact's estimated survival for this issue is 61,000 pieces total or 12.6% of the original mintage.

Scotty, while I understand what you're saying, most collectors hold some things close to their vests.
My contention is that the represetation of positive acknowledgements will not display an accurate number of the 1909-S VDB's which reside in collections of the members of any forum (not just this one) when such questions as this are asked.
By the way authentic 09-S VDB's are not rare in the market place a person can buy one of many different grades of this coin at will.

I've seen multiple threads and responses here where members will admit to, (and show photos of...) owning coins worth much more than any 1909-S VDB. It's one of the very reasons my main focal point is the Lincoln Cent. It's due to its "collectability" for lack of a better word. There are many, many more coins that are more rare than the 09-s vdb....but...when those 3 initials are typed...along with "1909-S"... all kinds of heck is unleashed... it facinates me somewhat...

I'll be 48 in September. 37 years ago I was lucky enough to watch my grandfather give my father this vdb-s. My grandfather "dropped" it in the front yard of his home, and then "allowed" my father to "find" it with his brand-spanking-new metal detector! The story behind the coin is worth so much more than the coin itself. I now have grown sons...and I now have coins that they need to fill holes in their own albums.
