So, I have gone and bought penny rolls to search twice now and both times the tellers were a little strange with me. The second time was today at a different bank than the first one and I figured I would ask if they had any Kennedy halfs. She got all huffy and started slamming the penny rolls down as she counted them out. I specifically went to a bank that I know is not busy and there were not any other customers there. I have no idea what it was I did wrong in this situation or if she was just having a bad day. Does anyone have any tips on how to get interesting stuff from tellers? Thanks

One thing I have always done is get the coins by the box. They have to go to the vault - but that's easier than getting 4 rolls from this drawer, 3 rolls from another, 5 from a third and so on.
When I first started, I always made sure to go to the commercial window and ask if I could "buy" a box of coins. Now they all know me so it's not a big deal. At first they all asked what I was doing - so I told them the truth, that my son and I collect coins. They may have thought it was weird, but they were always polite.

I've always had friendly service when asking for rolls at my bank. I just started roll searching in June though. The first time I got a box I went in to deposit a check and then asked for a box of pennies and a box of nickels. I felt a little weird about it at first. The teller was very friendly about it and said that they have one customer that comes in for half dollars, so it's cool. Well it turned out that the teller accidentally used a withdrawal slip instead of a deposit slip for my check I tried to deposit. It took about three weeks to get everything cleared up. They're happy issue me boxes. I think they're just happy that I still bank with them.

I go to the same bank to deposit my check and the same four tellers are working. Well through the months you get to know them. And how I ease into getting rolls to search, I tell them with a smile that I'm scanning their coin trays for collectible coins, and I'm not out to rob them or anything. They're so nice they laugh at the lameness of the joke. Than I place my order for rolls. Oh by the way the teller that gave you a hard time, maybe she was having a bad day. Don't take it personal. Keep on asking for those rolls!

None of the banks around me will sell me boxes unless I order them a week in advance and then only one bank will order them for me. I try to buy at least 10 rolls of whatever it is I am searching. Most of the time I get a good mix of customer rolled rolls and Brinks rolls. My best finds, for the most part have been from customer wrapped rolls!

It sounds to me that you tried to buy rolls of half dollars with rolls of pennies. Is that correct? If so, that is probably why the teller was upset.
As a general rule, never use your "buy bank" as your "dump bank".

Sherry: From your previous post I think we live in the same area. I bank at Bank of America and they don't order coins for customers at least that is what they tell me. They also don't ever seem to get any of the new coinage like Presidential dollars. I'm thinking about opening an account at KNBT. The tellers seem much more friendly although I asked if they would order boxes of halfs for me and they also said they could not. Not sure if it's because it's a very small market.

I've had pretty good service with Wells Fargo generally. There are a lot of branches near me so I just stop at a different branch whenever I am in a different part of town. I also don't cash in coins and buy coins at the same time. I've never tried buying a box at a time, but it sounds like fun, maybe I will try that soon.

RPT, I've never had a problem with BOA ordering for me. I've bought up to 12 boxes of dimes per order. You will occasionally encounter BS from individual branches, though. Sherry, chalk it up to the fact that teller had a bad day. Some just don't care for their jobs all that much. Also, like one poster said, don't buy and dump your coin at the same bank. That's very important. Good luck, ffd

Most of my experiences with tellers have been positive. Only a couple banks gave me a problem, and by coincidence they were all PNC banks. PNC is horrible with their customer service.

Any business will give you the stink eye until you get acquainted with them. @RTA: I don't know if that means you're in the same area. They probably just have the same business practice. You have a week to get to that bank so that's still pretty fair, I guess.
If you did happen to trade pennies for equal amount of halves, then you're bound to get some annoying questions and grunts. Sell them for paper, then go across the street to the next branch and buy different coin with that paper. Less nosiness. Most tellers, though, don't give a crap and're just happy to have a job.

BOA will order coins for customers. I have found them very helpful. Plus they have Loomis rolls (at least in my area), which I find more productive than Brinks rolls, at least for halves.

I was buying the halves and the pennies with paper. I went to a Merchants and a PNC (they were rude at the PNC today) and I am going to be dumping at my own bank (which is a BOA because they told me the same thing about not ordering but they said that I can buy whatever comes in) by deposit, not by cashing. RPT, I live near Allentown PA.

I just came home from a Music Festival near Allentown, PA. On the way through Allentown we stopped at a Sunoco to fill up with gas. I asked the cashier if he had any "funny money" and he said that a kid had just bought some cigarettes with "these". I walked out with 15 Walking Liberty half dollars! At face!
