I noticed the mint marks on these two 1917s Mercury dimes are in different places. Is this normal for the time period?

It is normal for any mintmarked coin prior to 1990 since the mintmarks were added to the dies by hand. It is now part of the hub design so the mintmarks of one year will always be in the same location.

As noted those were placed separately by hand. Also, more and more large and small mint marks are being found in that series. Notice how the one on the left has a rotated Mint Mark also. Not only are they all over the place but turned so many different ways you would suspect the Mint workers had a little something for lunch in the way of Alcohol. Rotated verses are excessively common also.

So by extension, is there the same variability for the MM on the 1916 D? Is there a resource that shows them all?

I don't think so. Actually there are really not a lot of books on the Mercury dime as there is with some other coins. For example you could probably find many, many books and articles in magazines on Lincoln Cents. To answer your question, yes, even the 16D has those wandering MM's. I have 10 of them and the MM is high, low, tilted left, right, etc. Out of over 3,000 Mercuy Dimes in my collection, I've always wondered how many may have the reverses the same. Even many of those Dimes have rotated reverses to some degree. Possibly 25% to 30% have that problem. And then too more and more large and small MM's are being found. The Red Book is starting to list more and more of those too.

The 1916D Mercury dime had four dies just like the 1909S VDB Lincoln so there will be four mintmark positions. I believe the PCGS Guide to Counterfeit Detection has pics of the positions and the mintmark punch is the same one used for the 1914D Lincoln so it will have a triangular shaped hole.

Thanks biochemist. I forgot that I also had this book by David Lange.
Here is the pertinent page.
