It's a decent strike with really nice fields. The hit on the cheek as well as the spots next to the eagles head concern me a bit. It is a beautiful coin with excellent eye appeal.

thanks. I was impressed when I saw the coin in hand also. there is also some slight toning under the date that you may not catch in the lighting. the spots on the reverse look to be water spots? maybe from the mint? as far as I know, I havent exposed them to water. but thats my best guess as to what that is.. any thoughts on a grade?

Those spots would, IMO, limit it from a 65 grade. I believe it would go 64.

I also say 64 based on those hits on the obverse. Looks to have a slight die crack from the truncation of the neck and partially through the hair? or is that just the pic.

im not sure about the neck. I checked it out and I dont know what to make of it. not a scratch, or die crack. but it looks more like a die crack than a scratch. I do I have another 59 that does not have the scratch or reverse hits.. maybe that could get me a 66+

It's a die crack. There's one there, through the hair, and down the west wing.

how would these detract from the value, if at all?

The base of the bust and leading edges of the wings are very common locations for die cracks on Washington quarters, it will not affect the grade or value on this coin.

Die cracks might prevent a coin from going beyond MS65, but I don't see the die crack being a limiting factor here. I think the hits on George's jaw are small enough it might get a 65.

They usually don't, at least not anymore.

I disagree, but to each's own. The way I see it, it indicates that the coin came from a mint set. Just enough spotting to let you know where it came from but not enough to harm its appearance... nothing wrong with that. I've seen plenty of graded 66's with far worse eye appeal in terms of this.
Of course, it could be left over residue from some harsh cleaner too lol...

you can determine it came from mint set just from the crack? or from those spots? I have another 59' identical to this one. maybe I should post that one and see if it would get a higher grade. the other one does not have a crack or those spots. ill post later tonight

Sorry for being vague, again.
The 59-64 sets came in flat packs. If a coin is lustrous and has those spots, it probably came out of one of these.
