I ran an ad asking to buy wheat cents. That I would buy a small stash, rolls or by the pound. Not sure what I expected but today I get this reply ...
Have 3000 plus Wheats. Have some semi-key dates and lot of S-mint. Coins mostly in good or better condition. To discuss please call xxx-xxx-xxxx
The number is local.
Apparently he knows enough to know semi-keys and the key dates have been pulled out or didn't exist. I'm guessing a lot of 40's and 50's
I'll take them all but don't know what to give. I want to be fair but don't want to pay to much.
Will ask questions like: are you a dealer?, how do you know what is there?, how are they stored and if in rolls are they sorted?
Thoughts?

I would only pay a price expecting all common 40's and 50's.
so fair I would say is $.035 per. thats more than a dealer would pay for them, and more than he would sell them for.
But that's just me. I would assume they are all common Wheaties.

i'd offer maybe about $200 which equals to a little less then 7 cents a piece, 6 cents below what my dealer is selling

Thank you. I just emailed him that I would call so I have some time.
My first thought was without knowing anything I would take them at $.03 so I'm not that far off which is what I wanted to know.
If they where sorted by year in rolls I might go a little more.
I agree with your assumption that will be common but one error would put me over. Depends on what he knows and the time he was willing to spend on them :) Pulling out key dates is easy. Finding specials is a little more tasking.
Thanks again!
Any other thoughts out there?

Thanks Adam. Guess it depends on how many the "plus" is. I might go that high but will start some what lower.
$0.13 at the dealer for random wheats? Gads!
Thanks Again!

At least he didn't call them "unsearched" wheats.. But I'd agree on the most likely picked thru selection. Could always start low and if he fights on price a lot maybe it's a sign there could be some better coins in it.

My boss just bought 20,000 for a guy and guess who had to sort and search through them all. ME! It took me a few days but I did it. The guy claimed they were "unsorted" but it clearly had been. All of them were 40's & 50's with the exception of a few which were hard to tell what they were because they were so worn and beat up. I believe my boss paid him $.03 on them. Its safe to say I have looked at enough of them for my liking.

3 cents apiece would be fair.

Oops :)
I called. This is a collection, appraised by Littleton. He's been buying from them for years. He's going to send me a list.
The guy sounds like he's in his 70's and wants to liquidate for 50% of the appraisal.

Wouldnt pay more than .03 for common wheats. If he has bought these from Littleton they are sure to be overpriced. Probably wanting $1 a peice after the 50% off...lol.

Dealing with and working next door to Littleton Coin, it is amazing that people buy and sell through them. If you sell, they pay cents on the dollar and if you buy, you pay dollars on the cent. But, they are one of the top coin companies out there so they must be doing something right. How many other coin places have over 300 employees?
As for the wheats, I would pay $90 to $100 easy.

He said it was appraised at $3000 (retail). Must be some nice ones in there. Tubes of teens :)
