jfransch, Liberty's mouth is closed, the '1' is very close to the drapery, your 1827 coin is O-142. (R-3), and a nice one at that.

Zee, I wondered where you were off too. Haven't heard from you on this thread for a few days. Thanks for correcting the 1827, I couldn't pin this one down at all.

Well thanks guys, I thought that I might be in the way here, with uncalled for attributions and things like that. Sometimes I don't know when enough is enough.

1828 O-112 (R-3)

32-Days-Of-Capped-Bust-Half-Dollars!

It's difficult to see on the image, but there is a small die lie by the one and at the end of the bust. Star 13 is very close to the curl but doesn't touch, and there are very small lines that connect the arrows.

Look at the two coins that Moe posted. The first one has a flat or square base 2 and the second has a curved or round base. That's the difference.

Thanks echizento!

From member "SomeGuyFromMichigan" (thanks for this info... it has been very helpful)
"Bust halves were struck without a collar.
When the Mint employees upset the edges, the planchets
were sent through a Castaing machine.
It had a set of Bar Dies, these dies would intern impress in the words
"FIFTY CENTS OR HALF A DOLLAR" and upset the edge.
Sometimes the planchet would slip while being lettered or ride up
the dies while in the Castaing Machine giving the appearance of an edge error.
But it is not, just regular production problems.

Then the planchet would be sent to the Screw Press.
The dies would then squeeze the planchet and the metal would flow out to the edge.
On many Bust half dollars you can actually see this metal flow.
Below is a drawing of a Castaing Machine."

Do you suppose that this was a slow "squeeze", turned by the handle of a screw press?
