Has anyone else apart from me noticed that the portrait of our Queen is a lot smaller on the 2004 Aussie 20c. coins than on other dates?

Aidan - You actually have two different obverses in 2004 a large head (flat) & small head (pointy) "A" in both the mint & proof sets, and in both the 20c & 50c now this gets a little confusing but if I have this right, you have... PROOF SETSLarge 20c & 50c in one set. Small 20c & 50c in one set. Large 20c & small 50c in one set. Large 50c & small 20c in one set. MINT SETSI have only come across two varieties in the mint sets... Large 20c & 50c in one set. Large 20c & small 50c in one set. Although I believe you can get the other two types out of "Baby" sets... Hope I have this right & it helps you

Thanks for that.I noticed that the head was a smaller one when I got one in change over here in New Zealand a while ago.We won't be finding any Aussie coins in change over here much longer,as we are in the process of getting rid of our old coins.

Aidan,
I am afraid Madbudgie got his varieties about face.
The large head 20 cents of which 400,000 went into circulation has the pointed A text and the small head 20 cents has the flat top A text. Other letters are also different but the A is easiest to pick. There were tens of millions of the small head variety released into circulation. As for the 50 cents, only the small head went into circulation. The large head can only be obtained from 2004 mint and proof sets and baby mint and baby proof sets. The Proof sets have all combinations of the 4 coins, the mint and baby mint sets only have 3 combinations so far sighted.
The 20 cents in the Proof Sets also has two reverse varieties recognised by either small or large designer's initials, SD. Only the large SD appears on the uncirculated 20 cents.
Hope this helps. Wayne

Hi Ben and welcome to the Forum. It is difficult to say how the price will go on ones from circulation. They certainly are hard to find. In two years I think I have only ever found 4 from all the 20c I look through each week. The problem is that people and dealers can take them out of the Mint and Baby Mint sets and sell them as choice uncirculated. A bit too easy really. There should be a price put on effort and sheer luck because that is what one needs to find one in circulation - there was only 400,000 issued and those coins are in the Australian melting pot with xxxx millions of other 20 cent coins dated 1966 to 2006 and from Cairns to Hobart, Norfolk Island to Perth, Christmas Island to Darwin. You did well to find any. To me they are different to the ones in the sets, because the blanks and coins for the sets are treated and pressed differently to the circulation coins. The large head 50 cents on the other hand for Aidan's info, can only be obtained from the mint sets. Wayne

Some other varieties exist - 2002 in proof has Reverse A with small SD, 2004 in proof has both Reverse A and Reverse B, 2006 in proof has both Reverse A and Reverse B. A silver proof dated 1998 from Masterpieces in Silver Set has same Reverse A and Obverse B as 1999, the base metal unc and proof coin for 1998 has the Raphael Maklouf bust of Queen.

Thanks for the welcome and the information Wayne! I will probably sell some and keep some. In other words I can't decide what to do with them so I will split the difference. I can see them becoming an ongoing nightmare!
Regards, Ben
