Hello,
I am a new member to this site and have only recently started collecting coins here in Melbourne, Australia. One of the reasons I have decided to create a new post here today is that I recently bought a number of 2005 UNC mob of roos coins from a reputable dealer. When they arrived I found that around 60% of the coins were (and forgive me if my terminology is off) "shallow struck", where the details of the top roo were almost non-existant (only an outline of the body shape, no eye, nose or inner ear details). This was also the same for the head of the 2nd highest roo aswell.
My questions are is this a) an error worth anything of note or b) a now devalued coin due to the nature of the error involved? Also has anyone else come across this error recently? Thanks in advance for your help. I don't have access to a scanner to scan the coins, but can probably produce a computer mock image if required.
CM.

Coinmad, quite a few like this have popped up in Perth in the last month or so. What you are observing is more likely to be die fill rather than a weak strike.

Coinmad, firstly let me welcome you to the CC forum.
Hope you enjoy your stay with us and look forward to reading your posts.
Here in Brisbane we have also found some of these coins in the same condition. As some people consider these "mules" (still to be confirmed) I would hang onto them as they could be worth the wait.

Hi Again,
Thanks BM1947 for your welcome to the forum, I'm sure that Ill be hanging around a while as the people here seem to be very helpful. Thanks also to you and thesandpit for your information aswell.
I will definately be holding on to the coins as (I think) theyre an error and theyre in UNC condition. The concept of them being a Mule is interesting and would love to get any feedback you receive on whether or not they are mules (although I thought a mule was where the obverse didnt match the usual reverse - theres no double rim here either?). As far as them being a die fill, and again excuse my ignorance, but what exactly does that mean (ie how does that come about?).
Anyway, thanks again for your help, it is very much appreciated.
Cheers
CM

filling is when grease, junk, and metal shavings fill the die, and keep any fine details from showing up. they usual are only valuble when part of a motto or date are missing. the most valueble ones are funny or insulting, such as a pennie that says United States f America", instead of "United States of America"

Keep in mind the 2005 Roo was minted in an emergency situation, in a real hurry. IMHO errors will not likely be overly expensive because there are so many of them.

The coin was minted in error in the first place as the circulating dollar for 2005 was only to be the 60th Anniv. of the End of World War 2 (Dancing Man) design. Either the wrong 2006 reverse was used resulting in a 2005 Mob of Roos or the wrong 2005 obverse was used depending on whether RAM was striking 2005 Dancing Man or 2006 Mob of Roos dollars at the time. The error was discovered after a lot of coins were produced and it was decided to release them rather than melt them dow. More coins were minted to cover up the error. So what started as an error mule became an authorised issue.
Best to hang onto any until the mintage figure is released.

I have seen a number of these as the head side looks like a smudge effect and the tail side has a lighter smudge. It is not known as after they produced these after a while there was a sudden stop from the mint. Also reports of rabbit ears, but not known why the mint have come at a holt after a while. It could be a possibilty what was left in the mint where melted down as staff at the RAM are not allowed to commment as also it would be interesting what the mintage figures are.Expected a low mintage than previous years
