another reason quarters are circulated way more and always have been then half dollars and silver nickels are lower because they were only minted from 42-45 instead of pre 1964 it all makes sense when you think about it

So being fairly new to actually paying attention to collecting here (always have collected, but just in the toss it in the "important" box and some day I look at it), do you guys do the roll searching just to find silver? Ore are there other things you are doing, such as looking for pieces to add to your collection? Are you silver collecting?.... All in all its sounds fun. That's one of the things I like about this thing, seems like a never ending treasure hunt that continually pays off little by little over time. Also when you say "I Searched another box" - how many rolls are in a box and where do you get boxes...just go to the bank and swap searched rolls out for new searched ones, or do you use paper currency to by the rolls? I am, and always have been into quarters. I love the sound that the silver quarters make. This sounds fun to me...i might give it a go.

I've gone through $60 worth of quarter rolls so far. No silver, but I was doing it to mostly finish clad set. But even for that Not much luck there either...one ATB in fair condition and a slightly better montana. I can't believe how hard it is for Ps to come over to this side of the country. I can't bring myself to do dimes even though I might have a better chance because 1. they're more difficult to dump 2. I don't have as much of any excuse since my clad set is nearly complete so it'd be more of a shameless silver hunt.

well since the person asked questions about everything but quarter collecting I figured I wouldn't waste everyone's time reading this forum, but I would rather inform him on a more personal level and help him out like that. If he doesn't know the answer to his questions post them in a new topic. Everyone can see them then since the topic will be called something like "roll hunting questions" not "quarter roll searching" Just figured I would help a lost coin collector out but doesn't seem like it's worth the time anymore it would have been easier contacting someone with so many questions 1 on 1 in an email rather then on here when I first started I had contacted a few people who sounded like the knew what they were doing to get some ideas and information everyone is different I guess offer still stands for anyone who has questions

search for: silver proofs (clad and silver) nice examples of clad coins for sets (I Love making sets they are my goal) M.A.D. coins (misaligned dies) Cudand specifics of each coin ATB and DC/territory quarters I am making a year set of penny rolls a box contains penny 25 bucks nickels 100 bucks dimes 250 bucks quarters 500 bucks half dollars 500 bucks I get my boxes at one bank and drop them off at a few others ask the tellers politely and they should be able to get you boxes at no fees (I warn you to not get too carried away like others on the forum because their banks add fees to buying boxes) I take the money out of my account on a withdraw slip to get my coins and drop them back off at another branch with a deposit slip when I have searched the coins quarters are fun do what makes you happy and what looks cool, interests you or is easiest, hardest to you its about your preferences in this hobby after time, going to the banks, looking at the coins, you are hardly making that much money if any. If you want to make a profit I suggest a job rather then coin collecting have fun with quarters, dimes, halves, pennies, whatever you can get your hands on. Thats what I do and have come to love searching all coins thanks for the questions and sorry about the attitude in my last answers having a bad day lastly I don't consider myself a silver hoarder, but I save whatever I find, that's just common sense. Some save copper pennies (pre 82) which I consider more of hoarding then saving silver. Once again all your preference.

Thanks for all the answers either way. Some times these forums can be frustrating to use. I appreciate them either way. My questions were aimed more at Quarter roll searching rather than just roll searching. I love Quarters.

The only exciting things I've been finding include a 1974 French Franc and a commemorative Canadian Quarter (Women's Hockey). No silver in the rolls at work :(

Hi all. I searched a $500.00 Brinks box about two months ago. I found one silver. Other than that, I was able to find a few keepers for my collection.
About a month ago, I bought a whole bunch of coins from a woman at work. It was a mixed bag of coins from years ago when she worked at a gas station. I paid $60.00 and got 16 silver quarters, 24 silver dimes, and at least a hundred wheats and mixed foreign coins. I think it was a pretty good deal, and saved me the work of hunting rolls.
I do really like roll hunting. Usually I stick to nickels and cents. I may do another box of quarters in the near future.

Quote: So what's the deal -- as far as an explanation that anyone can think of -- as to why quarter and dime boxes are so much lighter on silver than half dollar rolls? You'd think that the 15-dollar coins would be the first out of the pool, but they seem to be the only ones left. Halves stopped circulating when the Kennedy half came out. People grabbed the 64s and then the 40% ones almost as fast as they were made. Businesses adapted to quarters being the largest coin. With little business demand, what halves there were, sat in fed vaults, like dollars from the 1880s were still sitting in the vaults in the 1960s. Dimes and quarters were recycled, and silver got pulled out each time the made a trip through the system. Halves, however, could be recycled, partly recycled or stuff that sat in the vault for 30 years, with a decent ratio of silver.

From an envelope at a teller's area, I found that she had a lot of Glacier quarters and I bought one for my National Parks folder.

$170 = 1 x 1949 Washington, in nice shape. Made my day.
In addition, the hunt continues for state parks, but man oh man I have seen NO 2011 state park quarters just yet.
