I still think its clad. Just from the tone and color of the face
I had a 1980 I thought was strange it looked silver on the edges most the way around, One spot about a inch showed the copper the rest all silver/nickle
It sounded funny like silver ring to it in the drop test being the copper was not correct in the center.
The coin was prob mostly nickle and the copper amount was not correct in the center making it ring like when you drop a nickle or a silver coin.
So it looked silver untill you got to one spot. Its called a clad lapse over strike meaning the nickle on both sides came over the copper or the copper was thin inside the center .
Sometimes when you look at quartes you see it one one side its all nickle and the copper shows on the other side

Odds are that is just a funny clad but it is just to strange to not be sure. That is interesting on that '80, did it pass the tissue test and did you weigh it by chance?

the 80 looked silverish It was just nickle/clad that had a funny light brownish tone like silver gets.My suspect was it had been heated for some reason making the tone look like that of a silver 65-70 clad vs a reg clad As I spun it arround some found a spot where the copper stuck out the side like a regular clad I did the paper test.
Not many people talk about this test but it works Its the paper mark test. You can use silver coins like a pencil to write on paper it leaves a grey line, clad/ nickle does not leave the grey mark Lay a piece of white paper on the table. Take the coin sideways hold it like a pencil and press down rubbing the coin into the paper see what mark it leaves The silver will leave a greyish mark like a pencil the clad will not leave a mark.
Take a 40% silver draw a line take a 90 silver draw a line take a clad/nickle try and draw a line
then you will see exactly what I mean about leaving a pencil like grey mark and not leaving a grey mark

Quote:Broke out my wifes camera, does a little better than my droid. Added approx. 15 pictures close-ups, obverse shots, reverse shot, edge shots, and tissue test. If you have questions about the photo read the caption below it. I hope all the shots will help clear things up, off she goes in the mail tommorow! http://picasaweb.google.com/1074358...jzK_5hM2dag# Look at your Photo 9 of 21. One "tell" that hasn't been mentioned is the luster grazes on the silvers which won't appear on the CUNIs. Another "tell" is the unmistakable pitch on a spin as the coin comes to rest. I'm going to say it's a CUNI, just from the absence of the luster grazes.

Update:
I got a second opinion on it from the most knowledgeable dealer in Grand Rapids, Jade Rare Coin. She said it looked authentic but was not sure. She strongly advised me against sending it to ANACS to be graded and wanted me to hold off on sending it anywhere until she got a little more info on the coin. She suggested it may be illegal to own and may be confiscated if sent in to a grading company.
January 10ish she called me and said that it was not an illegal coin and she was sending stuff in to NGC to be Graded on the 15th.
So that is where I am at, I expect it to be back soon and you guys will be the first to know. I will post a Pic of the slab no matter what it comes back as.
Thanks for the concern!

Thanks for the update hybes! Cant wait to see the pics. I have a question...I hope its not stupid...If its a "most knowledgeable dealer" why would she think its illegal to own a Kennedy half dollar?

Do you have to specifically request that the coin be checked for "off metal", or will they just do it automatically?
It would be a shame for the coin to come back as a regular graded Kennedy and not be checked.

Looks AG to me from your pics. I see a lot of halves like you do on a monthly basis, and its hard to miss a silver one with a trained eye. The video also indicates its silver as it has the distintive ring to it. All my halves go through the drop test and I only have missed a few during my edge checks. A silver plated half woudnt give you that sound.
Best of luck to you with this, I hope it comes back from NCG with a silver tag on it. Keep us informed.

She thought that maybe it was an intentional mint error that may have been illegally released. Kind of similar to the aluminum penny, but mint error instead of intentional but experimental coin. She was just being sure because she had never heard of that particular error, instead of doing something and regretting it later.

for crying out loud, she just sent it in a few days ago? Geez. The suspense is killing me! Well, at least somebody is finding stuff worth talking about.

Now I'm going through all my clad Halves just in case....
I didn't pay too much attention to mine when I was searching rolls. I would simply check the edge. If it was silver I would check the date. 1964 in one pile, anything with a silver edge not 1964 in another pile, everything else that wasn't exceptional AU in the spend pile.
I hope to see a definitive outcome posted on this thread. Either way it goes it is fun, informative, and exciting.
Out of curiosity, if it does turn out this is a clad 77' half, what could it possibly worth from a numanistic standpoint?
