I have been through quite a few hald dollar boxes and I think that anyone who searches rolls would know silver from nonsilver. If it quacks like a duck and looks like a duck it is a silver coin. Just a very rare one. I hope so at least because it will help me got throught the next box. Can't wait to here.

In the Red Book it does say.."A few of the pieces dated 1971-D and 1977-D were struck in silver clad composition by error." But it gives no values on those coins.

Would the 1971-D have the letter D on the coin? Or is this one of those cases where the location of where the coin was minted not on the coin.

It would have the D on the coin. The mint mark is on the die.

Spoke to the coin shop sending out the coin. She said she sent it to pcgs not ngc and it didn't go out until the 25th.

Little bit disappointed but it will be nice to have it in a pcgs slab!

Do you have to specifically request that the coin be checked for "off metal", or will they just do it automatically?

It would be a shame for the coin to come back as a regular graded Kennedy and not be checked.

I asked her and she said she would request a specific gravity test to check metal content, and she would specify on the submission form.

Cool, thank you. That would have been a real let down otherwise.
