The next time they make fun of you just offer them $100 for every U.S. Quarter dated 1975 that they can bring you. When they ask if you are serious just tell them yes, but you have to have a straight face when you do this. The guys I work with all made fun of me at one time but now I see them looking at every quarter that comes out of the vending machine. Some even ask me from time to time just how rare they are................. , But I'll never tell them.

Quote: Believe me, the comments/teasing are not female-centric. Most of the teasing I got about collecting came from BOYS. Come to think of it, I always figure that if someone of the opposite sex is teasing you, it means they think you are cute!! That's what I'm going with at least...

Don't let it bother you. They are the ones who will probably have train wreck lives with credit card debt, foreclosures, and that huge truck that they don't own :-) BTW, my fiance loves coins as much as I do and we go to all the shows together. There are females who truly love this hobby. Welcome my friend! Have fun here.

I know, that was great Tim. My co-workers will love me for that one. I get abused by them about coins all the time. In one ear and out the other, just like that!

A friend of mine has mentioned a couple times "I think your a little obsessed. I've heard the same from my mother and sister too. I enjoy laughing at them each time I pull a silver out of a roll too!

For all the YN that are getting made fun of at school by girls. They are actually doing you a favor, when you find a girl who enjoys the hobby as much as you do, you found a keeper. The ones that are making fun of you make it easier to weed out the bad ones.

Kids who are slightly different in any way get teased and sometimes even bullied and need a little "ammunition" to protect themselves at that point. My advice to a young coin collector would be to use the situation as a "teachable moment" in self-defense ... and as some have mentioned here, a good opener is to mention a few prices of coins that might send the detractors digging into their own pockets - like offering a hundred bucks for a 1975 quarter. Priceless (literally)!

That is mean but it tells them that the 1975 quarter is EXTREMELY rare or non existent. I am 19. I started collecting when I was like 6 when my grandmother would give me a half dollar for listening and being good in church. My girlfriend still teases me at time to time. But lately she hasnt because she pulled out her parents collection and looked at that. My family will still tease me though. This is a hobby that is truly overlooked. It is a good way to make money. You may buy silver now at 29 dollars an oz but in the future it should rise so you will make profit.

Remind them that coin collecting is the hobby of kings and that they are poor undereducatated peons who will need nothing else in life other that the line "would you like fries with that..?"
Then ask them how much gold they own. They'll shut up pretty quickly.

Quote: Just to make things clear I'm not still in school, this was about 87-89 that these things happened to me while I was in 6th or 7th grade. Wow slash, you've been carrying that around for a long time! You've come to the right place for therapy! I told you to put your change in your pocket the next time you are in the lunch line!

Some of my family members make fun of me. My dad thinks I'm crazy. The only other person who collects coins in my immediate family (a cousin) thinks I'm crazy. But I've been saving up my money, and I'm proud of what I have saved so far. Nothing beats getting a 1964 silver half for fifty cents when it's worth a few cents over ten dollars (my opinion )
