Do You Get Made Fun Of For Collecting Coins?

I started collecting when I was 11 years old. When I became a teenager, my collecting habits went underground. I still collected, but I wouldn't let any of my friends know. None of my classmates or friends knew much about coins so I pretended to know nothing either.

It wasn't until I graduated from high school did I start to openly collect again. For me, it was one of those cases of trying to hide part of myself from fear of embarrassment. As an adult I find that many people I know also hid their collecting habits while they were students.

The best piece of advice I could give is, don't let it deter you from collecting the things you like.

I don't get made fun of for much of anything, I'm big and have a big scary beard. Kinda like like a cross between a young Santa Claus and Charles Manson.

If anyone ever did say anything. I would ask them "whats wrong with collecting money".

I also collect 100 dollar bills. I could stare at a book of hundreds all day.

I'm a pretty young Numismatist, still in high school and I have never gotten any ridicule so far. It helps having a friend who has an even bigger collection than you though. Between me and him, we've convinced some of our friends to always be looking through their bills and small change.

I'm in therapy..and my therapist said that this was a great hobby to distract my mind from my current troubles. That's true...and that's what I tell people who ask....and if they still make fun of me....I beat the crap out of them. Not sure which one is more fun....?

People poke fun and say ignorant things often to me. They are all friends and family. I get things like "you paid $100 for a dime? I have jars of them, what will you give me?" Sometimes it gets to be overwhelming and hurtful, but I always get the last laugh because guess who they come beg to borrow money when they hit tough times. I respond by okay "ill give you a dime, you pay me back $100. Don't worry, I have jars full of dimes you can borrow"
