Am I correct in assuming that for the 1921-P Morgan the Obverse has nothing to do with what makes it the VAM that it is? I bought a 1921-O that says on the slab 1921 VAM41. I'm kind of confused on this one however. It listed as a 41B, then in the description of it they say " 41B IV 24-D1a ( Tripled left stars, Pitted Lower Reverse, Die File Lines Lower Reverse) (189) I-3-R6. Reverse D1a- Additional raised dots from rusted die around One with heavy File Lines all over Lower Reverse. They also use #2-4A. I can't match it up to any of the 1921-P's on vamworld or on SuperDaves 1921 VAM 41B page. I am still trying to figure out how to post pictures, I can e-mail them however if anyone would like to help me. I assume I just don't know enough yet. Thank You all, Lee.  Edited by rlcbj59

Purchasing this book and reading it will go a long way to helping you understand vamming. The Comprehensive Catalog and Encyclopedia of Morgan & Peace dollars by Leroy C. Van Allen and A. George Mallis. Affectionately known as "the big VAM book" by collectors, this is currently in its fourth edition. First published in 1971, it was updated and reprinted in 1998. It contains a detailed listing of all known (at the time) die varieties listed date-by-date and is loaded with pictures. At more than 500 pages, it contains a wealth of mainstream information dealing with the history of Morgan dollars, grading, Counterfeit Detection, photography instruction and more. Leroy Van Allen has also put out yearly supplements and detailed attribution guides since this work was published. Think of this as the A.B.C. primer. |

I just got the book Saturday & after reading what ya'll said, it's a DUH, Heres My Sign. Man, do I feel stupid, I'havent gotten to far in it as of yet. I looked it up & it's a little confusing but I'll look at them later today. I'm starting to get it. Thanks for the help all.

I owned 1 Red Book........40 years ago....and I could buy back then, a "BLUE BOOK"....the prices the dealers would buy your coins for...... It was an obvious difference in pricing...OR VALUE of any coins worth....the difference is something you must consider...my meaning is simple...the price you pay now with the " RedBook" is not the value you can get back if you decide to sell tomorrow........One needs to know where to buy whole sale pricing...my meaning is near dealer price's If it has information inside then its ok...as a resource....then thats ok....but I will not bet my bottom dollar on it....Today we have the GREY SHEET....that is more realistic of what the COMMODITY (the coin) is worth....as an investment....your just getting started, so I don't want you to be sucked into things....be a smart shopper.......All Morgan's are vams so just don't buy it because it say's " VAM" learn to be a smart shopper too... |

I'll look into the Grey Sheet, I have the 2011 Blue Book also & there is quite a difference in the price as you say.I'll gain more knowledge & keep reading the threads. Thanks for all the help Aladin, OZ, Dave, & to EVERYONE else who has been more than willing to share your Wisdom, Experience, Knowledge as well as what reference books & material to purchase. Thanks for making what I perceived as being a hobby, just collecting a Morgan from every year,into a real Hobby.  Edited by rlcbj59
