The other day I went to the coin shop and looked at three Seated half dimes for my 1837-1859 Type Set slot. I looked at a 30-something and a 50-something and an 1847. I noticed that the 1847 had a much larger date which touches the bottom of liberty's seat and almost touches the denticles. It looks just a bit smaller than the 1848 large date variety. Conder101 Bedrock of the Community United States 17884 Posts	Posted 01/14/2011 12:23 pm I believe that is the normal size for 1847. The size of the date logotypes varies wildly on the Seated half dimes. And if you think that is about the size of the 1848 large date then I'm not sure if you have seen one. Most 48 large dates you see being sold are not really the large date. They are medium dates where the date it touching the base like it does on that 47. On the true 48 large date the date actually overlaps the base. The bottom of the base is at the top of the inner oval in the top of the 8. The large date is supposed to be just a little on the scarce side but I have found it to be rare. I think the rarity is underrated because of all the mis-identified pieces.
