Hi,

I have this coin from the Swiss Canton of Neuchatel

1791 4 Kreuzer KM49
Ob. SUP.NOVIC VAL F G BOR REX PR
Rev. SUUM CUIQUE

I wonder if anyone knows what the legends actually stand for.

At the time the area was under Prussian control so I assume the "REX PR" part refers to the King of Prussia (Friedrich Wilhelm II of Prussia 1786-1797) and the F possibly refers to Friedrich but I'm unsure of the other lettering.

Interestingly the SUUM CUIQUE on the reverse seems to be common to Prussian coins of the time

Thanks

Nice coin! I have always been partial to Neuchatel for their unusual denominations. Not that 4 is uncommon, but they also have 10½, 21, 28 and 56.

F G BOR REX PR SUP.NOVIC VAL reads "Frederic Guillaume Borussorum Rex (=King of Prussia) Prince Souverain de Neuchatel et de Valangine"

SUUM CUIQUE means " à chacun son bien, à chacun son dû". Translated this is "To each well, to each his due"
