I purchased this 1863 Half Dollar today from a local dealer for $35. This is my first coin of this series and I have much learning to do ...

In the spirit of self-education I have evaluated the coin in some detail (comments below the photo).... and would appreciate any and all contrary or supporting views of my assigned grade ...

Grade-...-1863-Liberty-Seated-Half-Dollar

Obverse Observations:

I grade the obverse as VG-8.

The rim is visible all around and so are all of the ends of all dentils.

The shield has worn into the figure right leg ... but I can still barely make out the entire edges of the shield.

Portions of three letters in LIBERTY are visible .. are full "L" and partial "T" and "Y".

There is a very minor rim nick at 4:30 which might not even show up in my poor photos.

Reverse Observations:

I grade the reverse as VG-10.

The rim is visible all around and so are all of the ends of all dentils.

Wear in the eagle feathers is better than 75% ...

I can see nearly all of the horizontal lines in the shield.

Overall Grade:

Overall I say VG-8.

In hand the coin appears to have original surfaces with honest wear and no problems.

I would appreciate any and all feedback on my newbie assessment.

David

VG8 or 10 sounds right and the wear appears uniform and honest. The rim bumps are nothing unusual for a piece of this age/level of wear. $35 is a fair price for sure.

The comment of "original surfaces" is always a tough call and for a coin of this value, it's not critical.

VG+, not quite 10 IMO. Have the edges been messed with? They look strange in the photo.

1863-P is not an often seen date, you did well if the edges are not messed with. Even then, you still did fine. This is the great thing about dealers sometimes, they often price coins at greysheet value, even when the coin is scarce and under valued by greysheet. The problem is that you usually won't have them selling tougher date coins, they just don't come up that often.

VG-8 is exactly what I thought when I looked at it, for all the reasons you've outlined. Good job on the preliminary grading work! It always helps go get a few second opinions though.

PS: That is a great looking coin! I'm a sucker for the gunmetal toned seated liberties.

Thanks all for the comments.

Edges are fine .... what you are seeing is my lack of skill with the selection tools in Photoshop elements. The only edge/rim issue is the minor ding on the obverse at 4:30.
