I collect matchcovers. They are actually miniature billboards. Nearly everything you can imagine was once advertised on them. My favorites are the ones I have from the 30's and 40's advertising things like Butterfinger candy bars for 5 cents, meals for $1.50, hotel rooms(with radio) for $2.00 a night. Then there are all of those long forgotten products - Grisdale Coffee, Filigree Tea, Krasdale Salmon, and my favorite SPUD cigarettes!

I collect matchcovers.
I keep getting reminded of items I USED to collect. And matchbooks was one of them. Used to be a smoker so always found and kept many of them. A fun one to keep was from a wedding and then after a few years send one to the now divorced people. Unfortunately I gave them all away to smokers in the area.

I had a decent collection of matchbooks when I was a kid. Definitely a poor man's hobby since they were always free. It seemed that every restaurant and business with a retail counter had them for the taking. I believe they may be in a box in the garage.

Quote: and license plates haha. YAY! I am not the only taglodyte on this forum! I started collecting plates as a kid, back when they were routinely tossed away every year when the new annual issues came out. At that time the organized hobby was in its infancy, and saving old plates was considered a somewhat suspicious activity. Today this sheet-metal hobby has become almost mainstream. In my admittedly biased way of thinking, there are only three 'natural' collectibles hobbies: coins, stamps, and... license plates! The basic criteria are: universally distributed and widely available; produced for a singular important government or bureaucratic purpose; extensive cultural and historical base; produced in sufficient quantities to attract the interest of collectors, and most of all, NOT made with collectors' appeal as the primary/only purpose for their existence. It is amazing how much pure dreck is produced in this country with money-motivated endeavors at appealing to the acquisitive instincts with such stuff as beanie babies and happy meal toys. If it were not for plates and the success I have had with that hobby over my 40+ years of intense involvement, I would have no hope of being able to afford the types of coins I prefer to collect. So hey.. if you need some colorful decoration for those bare garage walls, I can definitely help you out!

Am I the only one here who collects records? I probably have around 500 records, a few of them are pretty rare, although nothing spectacular like Elvis' Sun singles. If there's a band I like, I have to get all of their albums; if I really like them, I'll seek out and purchase their rare pressings. One of the gems of my collection and probably my rarest record in terms of number pressed is by a band called Chumbawamba, a punk band from the 80's and 90's. They recorded an album that the record company wouldn't let them release due to copyright issues over samples that were used, but a few bootleg copies made it out and is now considered the Holy Grail of their albums.
I'm probably the most serious about my record collection out of my other collections. I don't collect like other people collect things. Most people now seem to think that collecting is all about making money, and if you can't make money from reselling your collection, then it's not worth collecting. You should collect what you want to collect if it makes you happy. Most of the records in my collection aren't worth very much in terms or resale value, but I collect them for the music. I love music and pride my self on my musical knowledge. Plus, there's nothing quite like putting a record on a turntable and dropping the stylus then flipping the record when the side ends. Listening to CD's and music on the computer isn't the same active listening experience, plus modern digital formats have inferior sound quality compared to analog sources.

You obviously didn't read all the replys carefully. There really isn't a big profit in collecting match books. Or license plates either. Then too there are beer can collectors, pop bottle collectors, Match Car and Hot Wheel Collectors, rocks, flashlights, popscile sticks and on and on and on. Actually I think MOST people collect for fun, something to do, fun, a way to meet new people, fun, places to go, etc., etc., etc.

This is great reading. I used to collect all kinds of things. Beer and whiskey bottles as a kid, stamps, coins, 1/24 scale plastic models, 1/18 scale metal cars, matchbox cars, old fishing reels and lures, coins.... did I put that already? Oh! and two vintage baseball cards. (would that be a collection?) I have pretty much sold off everything. Still have some stamps, 1/18 scale metal cars, matchbox cars, and the two vintage baseball cards to sell off. I'm trying to focus on one collection now. Coins! I'm surprised at how many different things there are to collect! Glad I didn't know this when I was a kid!

great to know other people out there collect the same as I do: Old 78rpm vinyl records antique locks and keys and these: seashells (the deadly toxic ones like cones) daggers and knives with handles made from animal horns and also stamps

I probably shouldn't say this but not to long ago myself and a few frinds decided that the records we had would make great targets. We would roll them down a hill and shoot at them. The 33 1/3 ones would shatter like clay pigeons. The 45's just bent all up or the slugs would go right on through.

Close, I collect Match Safes. The older style that are very plain and normally brass. Years ago while digging in my grand fathers coal bin I found one from an Anheuser Bush promo.

Lastgold, I'm watching for a matchbook with Hitler "strike here" on his butt, and I think it had matches shaped like bombs. I have one without matches, but am still looking. Do you have one of those? Ever seen one? The one I saw for sale was obscenely expensive.

Well I used to collect Star Wars action figures but sold those off.
Things I collect now would be coins, glass telephone insulators, records, old hubcaps and license plates, sharks teeth, and the best for last Volkswagens me and my dad have 4 buses, 2 bugs, and a notchback all pre 1961 and all running like champs.
