My last Coin Plaque Update was a couple years ago. Since then I've acquired a couple more of the Thermo Art Plastics coin plaques, and learned a few things in the meantime as well... I had never seen an example of the TAP 25c or 50c plaques, or heard from anyone who had, so I assumed they would fit with the rest of the series, ie US Renaissance Coinage. So I expected when they showed up, they would be the Standing Liberty quarter and Walking Liberty half dollar. This assumption was based on the other plaques I already owned being (mostly) Renaissance Coins (Lincoln Cent, Buffalo nickel, Mercury dime, Peace dollar, St Gaudens $10 and $20). How interesting it was to find that the Quarter in the series was a Washington (obverse) and the Half Dollar the REVERSE of the Franklin half! Who knows, maybe I'll still find examples of the SLQ and the WLH, but for now the collection stands as follows: Indian cent (obv and rev) Lincoln Cent (obv and rev) Buffalo nickel (obv and rev) Mercury dime (obv and rev) ... Washington quarter (obv) Franklin half dollar (rev) ... Peace dollar (obv) ... St Gaudens $10 (obv) St Gaudens $20 (obv) Given the new additions, I question if my assumption that TAP also made the Pratt $2.50 and $5 is correct. For now, since I seem to be the living expert on these and I know very little, I'll just have to keep looking and hope I get lucky with the missing plaques. I'll also keep looking for the SLQ and WLH, as there may have been multiple series of these. I'm in process of moving and plan to display the whole series once I get settled (maybe as part of the settling...). I've been waiting a LONG time to be in a living situation where I could display them. Once I get them up I'll publish some photos. Sorry for the wait if that's all you care about! As before, any info to enlighten me on these plaques would be appreciated. I'm committed (or should be) at this point to finding the entire series or multiple series... Ray

Hi, I have the Kennedy half and a Lincoln Cent of the Thermo Art coins. I also am looking for more. Do you have any duplicates? From what I've found they made front and backs of quite a few coin denominations and variations. You are the only other person I've located in 2 yrs that collect these. I don't why they are so hard to find. Do you know of other collectors of these? Dave

Dave, I don't know of any other collectors, so it's nice to find someone with the same interest. I do have a bunch of extras. I recently discovered that they didn't do WLH, but Franklin instead and I have both obverse and reverse. Still no $2.50 or $5. I have extras of Indian cent, Buffalo nickel, Peace dollar, and maybe a couple others. Your Kennedy is new to me...what is the thickness and diameter? BTW, there is a B&M in Reno that has a bunch of these on his walls...but won't sell them! He got them out of a local bank that closed. Ray

The Kennedy is 18" diam and 1 3/4 deep and syamped Thermo Art Plastics 1970. From what I've learned they made a complete set of coins up to 1970. I'll try to post pic. Do you want to sell any? Dave

The Kennedy looks nice! I've never found one of those, only the Franklin. I was originally hoping that all the "Renaissance" coins would be represented. First plaque I found was the St Gaudens $20, then the Lincoln Cent, then the Buffalo nickel, then the Mercury dime, then the Indian $10. I was hoping to find the Standing Liberty quarter and Walking Liberty half, plus the Indian $2.50 and $5, but the next find was the Franklin half, then Washington quarter, then Indian cent, so my hopes were dashed that the series focused on the Renaissance types. But your info may give me new hope...where did you learn that they made the complete set of coins to 1970? There is a dearth of info on TAP on the internet, unless I don't know how to search very well. I'm always looking for good references on them. I'm willing to sell my extras...but let's take that discussion offline...Ray

Ray, I set my email to on. I might be interested in the Buffalo nickel and Indian cent, depending on price. The guy I bought the half from is who told me about the other placques made. It was the first I found and didn't question him further not knowing they are hard to find. It was at a flea market so I can't find him again. Have you seen the placques made by Modern Art. I believe they're plaster but not to scale. They are all big as I recall. I've never seen any other full size ones. I've been looking for about 2 yrs. The gold pcs are really nice. I didn't know that they did them as well. Did you find most of yours on ebay? If in fact they made front and back of all coins pre-1970 that adds up to alot of placques. You're gonna need a bigger house to display them. Dave

Dave, I never got the email...please check to make sure the address is what SD gave you. I have the Wheat cent reverse from Modern Art, and it's exactly the same size as the TAP version. But I don't have any others I don't think. I bought my first plaque at a used book store but then all the ones after that have been via ebay. Indeed I'm already overflowing my den, though as you can see from the pics I may be able to fit a few more with some rearrangement. Until I found the Franklin half reverse, I assumed they issued only the smaller coins with both obverse and reverse, and larger coins with just obverse. Now I have the $20 reverse (it is stunningly beautiful in large size!) as well as Franklin half and I agree it might exceed my wallspace availability to place these all on the wall. Going to have to negotiate with the misses... Ray
